Puppy, Hector a pointer
on wednesday night our household gained another pet,
we have named him Hector - from the childrens televison programme many years ago - Hectors house.
primary hes a pet/companion , then show dog and perhaps an agility dog-
choosing hector has taken 7weeks, and 7 visits . we know his mum, a beautiful liver pointer from cheshire and we know of the sire a blanket black and white pointer from Newcastle upon-Tyne, but 9 week before we followed his mums pregnancy,
for Hector to fit into our household he had to be of good nature , a little bold but not bossy,
so far hes settled in really well, has a good appetite for his 4 meals aday of dry food , hes exploring and playing with the dog toys, one of his favourite items is an empty pop bottle and he is also learning what he can get away with.
toilet training - well he has to find the newspaper that is spread around near the back door ,
so far its a 60% success rate.
one of the bad things about new pups. but one that should be consider when having a pup.
the first night Hetor cried for about half an hour , he has a cage to sleep in ,
the second night ten minuets and last night he perhaps cried about a minute ,
one of the hardest things is not to allow yourself to let him out while hes crying, as this will make him think hes the boss and everyime tha he crys ill be let loose .
he has to learn how to fit into the household with the other pets too,
this was done by - top dog portia first - she welcomed him quickly,
next came Hugo meeting - again he welcomed hector quickly
but the 2 older dogs were alittle bit more reluctant - their reaction were "oh no another pup, im going to hid " to "if i ignor that little pup it will go away "
this is something that we are going to have to work on.
to have another social and happy dog - he will be out and about learning about different noises and experiences once he has had his second injection.also he will be able to attend dog trainning classes .
while at home we are playing a cd called crash, bang, wallop this is so he gets used of 50 different sound effects from car horns to horse-clip clop and of course fireworks nosies which is always abit of a problem .

Awww that sounds lovely. I
Awww that sounds lovely. I want another puppy now !
in one week my arms and hands
in one week my arms and hands are now covered with brusies and scratches from hectors teeth,
he has an assortment of toys but prefers to tug on the nearest human arm or hand,
something that he has to learn not to do very quicky,
will be glad when his other teeth come through.
he learnt to walk up steps , but not down steps yet so we have to carry him down 4 steps to the gardens dog area .
this afternoon he jumpped from the top step as he followed the other dogs - daft hector - hurting himself.
he will have a energic half hour running around then all of a sudden he will be fast asleep.
he enjoying raw chicken wing for breakfast , and the other 3 meals are his dry dog food.
the two older dogs still arent happy about him, but the other 2 think hes wonderful.
hectors still on 4 meals
hectors still on 4 meals aday,
he knows his name - as he runs to us if we call him, hes learning to sit on comand ,
we are getting him used of a collar and lead, walking in the garden and house. only as he still hasnt had his 2nd injection
he still cant walk down the garden steps ,
he plays fights with hugo , and it can become really rough with hugo getting hurt.
hugo is so gentle him the pup,
he guards hectors food from the others so hector can eat which out them pinching , they have become good friends.
Hector has now mastered the
Hector has now mastered the skill to walk/skip/run down the stairs . we no longer have to carry him down the 3 steps to go onto the garden.
portia now joins in with the play fighting , hector does play rough and needs to be separated now and again to give the older dogs a break.
he has also learnt how to open the lid of the kitchen bin..which has a locking system on it..
this we think comes from his grandma lines, Portia who can open the fridge & freezer door, and in the past has helped herself to food items, the kitchen bin, & the back door,
Hector is now able to get out
Hector is now able to get out and about ,
sunday he went to trentham gardens where he had many admirers ,wanted to stroke him and ask what breed he was, even a 2 year old lad grabbed hold of his neck to hug him ,
after what we thought would be 15min walk it that turned out to be an hour long - we also ended up carrying him a while - once home he slept for a good 2 hours solid.
he reacted to the crowds ,wheelechairs , prams and kiddy bikes and all nosies really well, very inquizative and tail wagging , hes a happy boy .
and this morning he had his first field walk with the big uns ,
yesterday at Leeds
yesterday at Leeds Championship Canine assoc show- Hector was placed 3rd in minor puppy dog class so now has qualified to attend Crufts next year .

Happy birthday Hector
14 days to Crufts,Hector has
14 days to Crufts,
Hector has now got to just walk on his walks out so he doesnt do any more damage to himself,he has a few bald patches on his face and ears where he has run through bushes of brambles and bracken.
are fingers are crossed that the fur/hair growns enough so that he looks better for the crufts ring.
update to hectors bald danage to his face-
we were treating this as if he was causing this himself due to an allergic reaction-food, pollen/grass seed on the grange,
hector has been for his annual jab, and the vet also thinks that he is allergic to something too, we have piriton tablets to give him,
Wow he's going to be on tv?

Thanks for the reminder that
Thanks for the reminder that it is that time of year again, I love watching Crufts, the dog show is great and trying to pick the winner is a no no I change my mind every time I see a different dog. But I love the Agility Class and the Fly Ball my god can some of them dogs get up a speed, and the good thing of this is they all look as if its the best day out in the world for them how they jump into the owners arms or run rings around them is just so good to see.
I went to Crufts as a spectator a good many years ago I enjoyed it but there was so much going on in such a large area I missed alot of stuff, I didnt really have a plan as I wasnt involved with a particular breed so I just wandered around but I would still love to go again.
I wish you all the best with Hector and Portia, lets hope you come home with a rosette or two and who knows this could be the start of somthing big. Have a great time and enjoy.
thank you Matt & SueV for the
thank you Matt & SueV for the best wishes.
spending a day at crufts is very tiring if you are showing a dog- you have to be at the NEC early between 6am-8am.some breed judging starts at 8.30am and you are not allowed to take your dogs away until after 4pm, all dogs have a entrance & exit pass,
and to make sure your dog is settled for the judging you have to make sure your dog has his/her spot on the wooden benches well before going into the ring.
pointers are easy to groom- just a quick comb down, teeth clean, trim whiskers , trim end of tail fur- make sure ears are clean, eyes are bright, nails clean and are not to long ,then there is the matter of showing "off" the dogs best features and allowing the judge to check over the dog.
in the ring dogs have to stand in a set way, and then they run - usually once down the mat and then back up to the judge. so they can see how the dog runs.
all dogs have a breed standard which the kennel club specify.
there are a total of 21,029 dogs entered,
crufts take over 5 halls at the NEC
and people come from all over the world to watch and take part in the show.
Hector and Portia didnt get
Hector and Portia didnt get placed at Crufts today but they both behaved really well, Hector stood and ran lovely, he was a happy boy in the show ring, and Portia looked stunning , we are very proud of them.
Proud parents and so you
Proud parents and so you should be, just to get to Crufts is a mamouth task, well done to Portia and Hector better luck next time. I am enjoying the program as usual and looking forward to the final to night. I love the Pomerainian he didnt half make me laugh a little dog with such big ideas but they are all beautiful in their own way, I hope they dont make the Pom stand next to the Newfoundland thats not a case of little and large its tiny and ex large, that Pom could get lost in the Newfoundlands fur and not be seen for days!!!. What do you think of the independant Vet checks for the defects?, alot of owners have been disapointed this year havent they by the removal of their dogs from the show, but I reccon this inter breeding has got to be controled as it is causing some breeds alot of dicomfort but is it a case of too little to late? its like the Tail Docking thing I still find it unusual to see some breeds with tails such as Corgies they have got such big tails for a small dog.
I know you have to qualifiy for Crufts but is there a season for dog shows? do you start to get ready as soon as Crufts is over? go for it Hector lets see you with at least a group winners rosette next year.
there is a season for dog
there is a season for dog showing mainly spring and summer- the kennel club has a list of companionship shows .but dog showing happens all year, some dog showing people live and breath dog shows .every saturday and sunday they travel many miles to attend the shows, and many hours grooming their dogs .
i attend dog shows to watch my daughter if its at a country fair or game fair, but i prefer to stay at home to look after the other dogs we have here as sometimes dog showing can take all day , and i do not feel its right to leave the older dogs all day on their own.
some people we know have done two shows in one day just to get points - this is gain CCs , and other awards,
-independant vet checks at crufts caused a big debate with in the dog show people , im told there was a special meeting set up by the people who show dogs regarding the newrules after crufts .
The six breeds that did not pass their vet checks at Crufts and which therefore were not given their Best of Breed awards were the Bulldog, Pekingese, Clumber Spaniel, Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff and the Basset Hound.
Vets are asked to look for conditions related to externally visible eye disease, lameness, skin disorders and breathing difficulty.
