Fridge Freezer Fire in Kidsgrove - occupants alerted by smoke alarm

Two crews from Kidsgrove and Sandyford were called to a kitchen fire on First Avenue in Kidsgrove at 8.40pm last night.

The occupants were outside on arrival and were uninjured and explained that their fridge freezer had caught fire but smoke alarms alerted them to it so they had quickly evacuated.

The man then admitted he had re-entered the property to try and turn off the power for the fridge freezer in an attempt to limit the damage.
Station Manager, Carl Mason said: “Smoke alarms gave the couple the early warning they needed in order to get out of the house quickly and safely. The man then decided to re-enter the property to try and isolate the power. This is not something we would encourage and instead advise people to get out and stay out and wait for our arrival.

“The fridge freezer had accidentally caught fire and required two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to use a hose reel jet to extinguish it. Fire damage has been confined to the kitchen however the rest of the property suffered some smoke logging so we ventilated it before leaving.

This incident highlights the importance of having working smoke alarms as without them the fire would have been able to progress further undetected which could have potentially resulted in two people being trapped.

The incident was closed at 10.00pm.
