Back in Feb 20th 2011 I visited the Doctors as every time I coughed it was painful, like couching up glass. At the end of the visit the Doctor told me that I'd got Pneumonia and if the antibiotics didn't bring the fever and pain down within two days I'd be facing time in hospital.

The fever did come down, and the pain did go away and I missed a fun pack stay on a ward. But the constant feeling of weariness and breathlessness persisted for the following months.

A couple of chest infections later, a scare from the doctor sending me for tests (blood and xray) for COPD after a 60% lung capacity test, which thankfully turned out to be negative.

Anyway, in an attempt to try and get some of my fitness levels back I've had a mountain bike for my birthday. It's not a state of the art Apollo Slant 20" mountain bike , but has been great for what I need. (See

Halfords full range of bikes - they've had some great specials on

So this week I've finally got my bike and have been on a number of runs this week.

The first trip out was just around the Bankeyfields Openspace and Estate.

The second ride saw me crossing Reginald Mitchell Way, to the field below Focus, down to Harecastle Tunnel, and down to Westport lake and back.

Yesterday I pushed it and rather than doing a loop around westport lake, I carried on down the canal past Etruria (The Sentinel) and back, on a 12 mile round trip.

Tonight I deviated from the canal run and road across the back of Ridge Road and down to the old train tracks, all the way kidsgrove, and up to whitehill to say hello to my folks, and then back home in under a hour.

I felt really chesty at the start of the week, but since I've been peddling I've felt better, in fact I've not felt this good in a long time, the exercise is really helping.

So if you want to take those small steps towards getting fit, I really recommend getting on your bike, in fact it helps that we are so lucky living here, because we've got so many cycle routes right on our door steps.

In fact we've got so many off road route, cyclist like myself that haven't been on the road for the past 15 years can get to these routes really very quick.

Routes down Canal, Routes across the train lines, which can take you either down to Kidsgrove or all the way onto Hanley and further.

I'll be uploading some of my routes shortly if anyone is interested, they're just flat off road ones for now, but if anyone has any suggestions the please let me know.

Off Road Route to get down to Westport Lake via the Canal.

Nice one Matt hubby and I

Nice one Matt Smile

hubby and I took to our ancient mountain bikes last year in a bid to get fit after spending a couple of years eating junk food, working long hours and not taking enough exercise. The local council have quite generously for the past couple of years sent out the cycle maps of the city, clearly marking routes along the old railway trackbeds, pathways alongside the canals, and also the designated cycle lanes around the towns. What an absolute godsend for us.

Last year I lost a stone and a half in weight through cycling up to 50 miles a week in 6 months. (As well as walking the dog and walking at lunch times at work)

And the best bit about cycling, once you've paid for your bike and your safety equipment, it's FREE!

I tried encouraging my 14 year old niece out on her bike last summer by offering to take her and some mates to the Tissington Trail in Derbyshire so they could spend some time outside, in the clear air, in the sunshine... she declined the offer, preferring to sit inside on her Blackberry chatting with her mates who only lived around the corner. So sad.

Currently I've not been cycling for about 8 months as hubby and I are awaiting a new arrival expected any day, but I miss the cycling sooooooo much. It's nice to get out in the early morning sunshine and achieve something before most people have realised it's actually morning! Big Grin

Maybe we could start a local cycling club - not a serious cycling club but maybe just a small group of people who want to get out and about together rather than feeling self-conscious about going out alone.

Hey RedGirl, congratulations

Hey RedGirl, congratulations on your lack of riding these past 8 months, let us all know when your little bundle arrives.

I've just had through a magazine from cycle stoke so will be having a good flick through it. I think it's going to take a few weeks to get used to steep banks but hopefully I'll get there.

The next thing I'd like to look into is a bike rack for the car, hopefully they aren't too expensive.

I like the idea of a local cycling club and agree about it not taking it'self seriously. It's worth perusing, as long as everyone doesn't leave me miles behind.

Thanks

Matt

I have also purchased a new

I have also purchased a new bike recently, mainly as I was getting extremely bored watching my son have loads of fun across the park on his bike whilst I stood there and watched.

Anyway, I am up for a cycle club, I am sure this could also include the little ones on some of the easier trails as well as us big kids going on some of the harder trails.....
