Sizeable Traveller Camp sets up on Focus's/Wickes car Park in Tunstall

By
view counter

The Traveller community spotted a perfect opportunity when spying the empty Focus car park and set up camp on Sunday.

The camp is triple the size of last week camp which set up across the road from the blue planet.

Flyers distributed for wickes claimed it was opening on the 26th July.

Stoke-on-trent City Council and Police have stepped up patrols and are dealing with the situation.

This is a nonsense cant we

This is a nonsense cant we pass laws that makes this a criminal offence and their vehicles can be seized?

I WOULDNT BE VERY IMPRESSED

I WOULDNT BE VERY IMPRESSED IF I WAS WICKES AND THIS WAS MY OPENING WEEKEND. I IMAGINE THEY HAD ALL SORTS OF WORK PLANNED AND NOW WILL BE UNABLE TO.
IF YOU SENT SHOP FITTERS TO THE REAR CAR PARK THEY'D LIKELY HAVE ALL OF THE TOOLS NICKED. WICKES MUST HAVE ALREADY SPENT A FEW THOUSAND ON MARKETING, PLUS LEGAL TO MOVE THEM, PLUS THE COST OF TIDY UP.
THIS IS A HIDDEN EXPENSE THAT CAN COST THOUSANDS, SOMETHING ANY BUSY CAN'T AFFORD.
I'VE GOT TO AGREE WITH MARK. IF THERE AR TOUGHER LAWS YOU HAVE TO WONDER WHERE THESE NOMADS WOULD DRIFT TO NEXT.

If it was going to cost

If it was going to cost Wickes big money they'd be all over it. Putting pressure on police and the council. Maybe even hire a private security firm to ask them to leave (if you get my drift). It wouldn't take long to shift them with the right motivation.

Noticing a unmarked police

Noticing a unmarked police car with it's blues on go up towards the camp, a friend decided to have a nose.

She lost the police car but was shocked by, in such amount of time the amount of mess that be made.

These people have a right to

These people have a right to stop and set up camp where ever they want.
They have their rights because they are ethnic minorities, and there's nobody willing to end this sorry state of affairs.
You can see how deprived they are by the photo's.
Expensive vans, and sunning themselves by their Barby's, and we foot the clean up bill every time.
Some on pitsnpots said its cheaper to keep paying the clean up bill.
Whose the mugs in this farce?

Terry situations like this

Terry situations like this really confuse me of how the law of the land is meant to work in this country. I always thought the law applied to all.

Me personally, I'd like to see the council utilise it's environmental crime team and put out a message, that the amount of mess left is not acceptable.

I also think the US Marines had the right idea in Panama with their loud speakers and music to get General Pinochet out of his compound.

W/M its a catch 22

W/M its a catch 22 situation.
Put forward ideas of shifting these nuisances and you are immediately branded racist, and open to all sorts of insults.
I found this to my expense on the other site.
The problem will continue ad infinite until the laws of trespass and criminal damage are exercised by the authorities.
It seems everytime they arrive the (reported and unreported) crime rate goes up, and the mess left behind is left to the tax-payer to pay for.
I would not use loud music but hire a crop spraying aircraft to spray them with manure, I bet they would not come back again, and I would willingly pay to see that.

It's less an issue of being

It's less an issue of being racist but having endless groups passing through this area especially and making a big mess each time.

I had an update from our

I had an update from our Councillor on Friday to say that Wickes had started the legal proceedings last friday, and as most of us will know the Travellers moved on friday afternoon.

Wickes have a clean up plan anyway to prep the store so will be expanding on that.

Car park safety barriers, and the barrier at the front of the store have been taken.

A quick reckky of the area today showed the mess that was left, but I was quite surprised that it wasn't as bad as I'd expected. Although Wickes could have started on their clean plan already.

terry turbo's picture

Once again these people are

Once again these people are allowed to merrily go on their way leaving heir trash for other people to clean up for them.
This is just a reprise till the next bunch of free loaders show up and do the same again, and again, and again.

Web Monkey's picture

Funny you should say that

Funny you should say that Terry, with a traveller camp down the road, and a high number of settled travellers in the area, are we seeing an increase in visits?

Will the council be ready for the next one. It also make you wonder how supported the traveller liaison officer over at the council is.

If I hadn't of read it posted

If I hadn't of read it posted on here, I wouldn't have known they were there.
It's Wick's problem not ours - right?

Web Monkey's picture

You're right it is Wickes

You're right it is Wickes problem. Why should Wickes have to pay court fees to move them on and clean up fees. After all this is a way of life, but why should businesses and tax payers have to pay for this way of life?

It took British Water Ways over 12 months to clear up this mess when the travellers camped on the then uncomplete Genesis centre.

terry turbo's picture

Marks, it is our problem -as

Marks, it is our problem -as they make it our problem by their anti social behaviour- that affects the people living in the surrounding area.
The tax-payer that ends up paying for the clean up with money that could be used in the community for a better cause than this, and the eyesore that once again we are left with until this garbage is cleaned up.
Surely someone at the council/Police can come up with a way of making these people clean up their mess before they move on leaving it to someone else.
Whether its Wickes, Genisis, or the fields either side of the road, the results are the same.

marks i havent worked for the

marks i havent worked for the past 40 years for free loaders benfits ive done it in the hope id see a return on it locally. tery is right that the council needs to work harder to clamps down on the mess

terry turbo's picture

Jon you are spot on. These

Jon you are spot on.
These people abuse their surroundings and have no respect for other peoples property.
I do not object to the people, but their behaviour and lack of respect for other people and their property is out of order.
As for the council/Police, they have to try harder to stop this constant disrespectful behaviour that the tax-payers of Tunstall, Sandyford and Goldenhill constantly pay out for.
They must be made to see that this is unacceptable.

Jon Morgan's picture

the thing is how? if you

the thing is how? if you impound a vechicle they wont leave. if you give them a big fine they will scarper and they wont pay. what the council need to do is to ask for a deposit for the duration of the stay whic they can only have back once they leave and leave the site in a decent state.

That reminds me of a storey.

That reminds me of a storey. A few years ago I had a mate who owned a farm in Shropshire. Some Asian guy from Wolverhampton paid to hire a field from him to hold a big market one bank holiday weekend.

The week before the market, a travelling community moved onto the field. My mate rang the Asian guy to say your market wont be happening – some travellers have moved on to your field.
As the storey goes, 50 Asians visited my mates farm shortly after. And the market went ahead as planned, without a hitch.

Jon Morgan's picture

i dont know about 50 asian

i dont know about 50 asian lads, but weve got 44 councillors
