Is there room for Hyperlocal? Are these the final days of MyTunstall?

In the past few weeks I've seen to two great hyperlocal journalists step down from their posts. First Mark Ellam took a step away from http://LongtonSouth.co.uk and then yesterday the shock resignation of Tony Walley from http://pitsnpots.co.uk

Where as LongtonSouth was a one man band, Pits N Pots is also ran by Mike Rawlins and has a number of contributors so will go on.

My worry is are we seeing the final days of Hyperlocal? MyTunstall (previously known as Bankeyfields) has been running since 2006 in one guise or another and recently has seen new highs in viewing figures.

But for me one thing is sadly missing and that's greater user input. We get very few comments on the site, hardly any other posts from other users.

Do I take this as a sign that MyTunstall to is on it's way out?

For years I've been asking for your news, views, your events. But this has never really happened. This year I was accused of ignoring the issue of the drug centre setting up in town, and I'd offered no support. The fact is I knew nothing of this, and if people don't let me know, how can I put a story together.

Sometimes how wonder how we can better communicate with our target audience. I have gone through similar experiences with other kinds of community.
More and more I think it's about how we achieve real communication and negotiate purpose. I don't know enough about your project, but I see value in it. I hope things will improve and your project will continue

Web Monkey I have had the

Web Monkey I have had the same thoughts for the past few months regarding the web site even people that used to be regular contributors to the site have stopped posting for some reason, whether or not it is work commitments or just lack of enthusiasm I don’t know. I think that we should consider doing a news letter entirely dedicated to the site telling people what we are about and some of the achievements that having a web site like this can bring to the community. We should then delivery one to every house on the estates inviting everyone just to have a look and perhaps get involved, I am sure at least 60% of the estate do not know that the web site exists. It would be a great shame if the site were to go I think over the years you and the people involved in setting up the site have done a fantastic job in bringing the estates closer together I hope you don’t get to disheartened and the site continue into the future.

Web Monkey I am so sorry that you feel we do not care about about what you and others do for this area,I can tell you that I read My Tunstall every day just to find out general local news.I would really miss this site it is always packed with news and views I do not sign in very often, usually if I want to add a comment then I sign in.but I am a supporter to everyone on the site and I will happily add more comments so that you can see people do support what you do.Over the last few years such a lot as been achieved by the supporters of this area, you make this a nice happy place to live and I sincerely want to say a big thankyou, long may the site continue.

Thanks everyone. I will take your suggestions on board. I might need help with the publicity?

I was hoping that by now I'd be able to take more of a back seat and people would be using the site more in the way it was meant to be where we all write and share news & events. It's just so hard to track things down.

I wonder why people don't engage with the site? Is it because it's really hard to do? I've also turned the members only comments off recently in the hope of getting more people commenting and that hasn't had the desired effect. Is it because of facebook?

Well I think this is an absolutley brilliant site I live just outside the area but take a good interest in it.

I hope this site continues, i personally think a lot of these sites are shutting down due to the economic climate people are having to do more work in these tough times.

Great community site this is and I hope it is kept in place I think you do a great job Matt & I for one will try and post more.

I really enjoy reading the articles and comments on this website. You are doing a great job keeping us locals informed as to what is happening around the area.
I for one would be lost without it.
No I haven't added any articles mainly because I haven't anything to tell you all at this stage and would love to in the future.
This is Staffordshire website is so confusing to use and I can't seem to get any information or local news, so rely on your fantastic knowledge and ability to keep this site going.
Don't you dare think of giving up.

As someone who has only

As someone who has only recently joined this site, I would be sorry to see it disappear as I have found it invaluable so far, and have had some really helpful advice from other contributors. How many regular contributors do you have? Are they people who are all working and have a restricted amount of time in which to comment? How do you advertise your site? Can you access contributions from local papers. Can you target some 'silver surfers' through the local 'how to use computers classes'? (I assume that there are some in Tunstall.) I am an adult literacy tutor and see this as a terrific way of people trying out there literacy skills to inform and entertain others. Do you have contributions from young adults and children via school ICT lessons?

Sorry if these questions are banal and everybody knows the answers. I don't. But when I get back to my roots, I will know or will find out.

Thanks for suggestions. I have been working on many poster ideas, and after a lot of inspiration from a friend who runs Spondon Online, I've come up with this.

Cracking idea Tilly, Matt can

Cracking idea Tilly, Matt can we get all the local schools to publish their info on here. Open days , charity events etc. Most of the regular contributors have children at various local schools.
I thought the " Community Fire Station" would make more use of this site.

Web Monkey's picture

That's the thing though

That's the thing though Steve, I don't know I've not got the time to go around all the schools to ask.

I tried it with the RA's locally and there was such a poor response. Seems like no one wants to share info with the rest of the community.

Hi ya Matt whatever happened

Hi ya Matt whatever happened to our elected councillors they all said what a great site this was and a useful platform for letting everyone know what’s going on within the wards. Looks to me they were only using the site to drum up support during the election.

Martin Garner sends me loads

Martin Garner sends me loads of stuff through, I'll ask him if he can do a blog for the ward, and maybe if he'll join in. Would people be happy to communicate with their Ward councillors that way, such as Martin, Lee Wanger, Dave Conway?

I need to get a few printed, and then find the time to go around the shops and so on seeing who wants to promote it. Bryn, I'd love your help mate. We need to get the poster in as many public places as possible, even pubs.

I need to drop one off for Sue at Asda as well.

Sue V's picture

Matt, can I advise you do not just drop the poster in to ASDA If it is not one of my work days it could go missing. Customer Service is always over loaded with returns or enquiries and there is such a big turn over of staff it will get put down and get lost.
The best thing I can say is I will collect them from you or perhaps meet you on the playing field or someplace o.k. Let me have 3.

Matt put a poster on notice

Matt put a poster on notice board in the entrance to Tunstall Market, also left one in Tunstall library they promised to find a place for it on the notice board. Took one into my Doctors Surgery in Dunning st but they are clearing all unnesessary stuff out as they move into new surgery soon but I have to take it down to new place and they will try to find a place for it. The Post office charge £2 per week I couldnt get her to change her mind so I gave up on that, the Brittania havnt got a notice board for the local community but I think I planted a seed there, I will go back and water it a few times and see how it grows. Next stop ASDA tomorow. Then I will have another think of any places I can talk my way into.

ive found using mytunstall

ive found using mytunstall very easy to use as you may see throughout this site i post regularly stories/information dont always comment on posts though,
im not liking facebook or twitter, perhaps its because i cant understand them.

not living in the bankyfields area i feel im not able to comment on the problems there on the estate , but as a wider view every estate in s-o-t has the same/simular problems. and we can all learn how to cope/report or rectify these things and mytunstall is a perfect outlet for these people to know whats happening in and around them.

i place information on here that i think people would be interested in, a new shop opening, a shop closing, new builds, leaflets i pick up from town , the cinnamon trust and of course the animals i have here, perhaps its not everyone interest and i dont expect comments about everything i put on here, but people will know of different things happening in and around them that would be of interest to other people. so put in on here.

Matt this site is needed, but i agree more people need to help you out .

Web Monkey's picture

And Dereth, I am so glad you

And Dereth, I am so glad you do. This site is so much more than Bankeyfields, I think we've just had longer with it, but that shouldn't put people off.

I've just been talking to people in Tunstall Park and if they people communicated better everyone would be aware of issues and more can be done.

We live in these little pockets of isolation and it's no good for us in this current age, where the chav and city bankers rule.

Divided and conquered that's the impression I get lots of people feel.

Hi Web Monkey I have only

Hi Web Monkey

I have only recently discovered MyTunstall. I emailed your residents association asking for your votes and support to help Brindley Ford win a NatWest grant to help towards a new playground. You offered to include an article in MyTunstall for us,thanks for that. Since then I look everyday and have sent in comments too. I noticed from the poster it states 'just for the ST6 area' I live in ST8. I have also found the Residents Association pages interesting and helpful. My residents association product a printed newsletter a couple of times a year but we need to consider alternative methods of getting the news out due to cost.
I'm sorry to read that Bankeyfields RA is struggling to get committed members for the committee, but you are not alone in this. When I'm feeling down about lack of support, I step back and look at all that we have achieve that would not have happened if the RA didn't exist. I think this is also true for MyTunstall.
Keep up the great work.

Web Monkey's picture

Hiya Linda, your more than

Hiya Linda, your more than welcome to have a section on here just like the Bankeyfields one (I've got the MyStoke domain name as well, so it's not just tunstall anymore). Or if you're interested in setting your own up (for free) there is a great organisation out their called Talk about Local http://talkaboutlocal.org.uk who come to local organisations and help them set up a site, and how to.

Thanks for the encouragement about the Bankeyfields RA, I'm sure it will get some local support in the end.

I've been to the Neighbourhood Watch Annual Conference today. David Bailey spoke about Integrated communications and how Facebook and twitter etc. were used by our local police force to keep people up to date with what is happening. HE PRAISED MYTUNSTALL, and said it was one of the best hyperlocal links in the country.
Hi praise in deed - don't loose heart and give up...we need MyTunstall to continue.

Web Monkey's picture

Thanks Linda for mentioning

Thanks Linda for mentioning this, that's great news,Dave's a great guy whose done a hell of a lot for making great use of twitter, facebook and this site and other hyperlocals to really bring Stoke Police into the 21st century.
