Farewell to Fishy/Nemo the second and request for fish advice for the next goldfish
Sadly after a day of not feeling him self and slowly fading away our Nemo or as our little girl calls him Fishy sadly floated to the bottom of the tank for the final time and failed to move or response to any stimulus.
Fishy has now gone to the big flusher in the sky but after the tears faded the kids wanted to know if we could get a new one?
If I'm going to get a new fish I think it would be useful if you lot could help me out and give me some suggestions if I do it again.
I'm probably going to new a new tank, and pump, gravel cleaning equipment, tips on cleaning and water change.
Feeding tips would be useful to as reading certain sites yesterday people were recommending peas orange bits of fruit and so on.
I don't need a needed fish or water based animal such as a fire shrimp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone
I am tempted with the chickens, maybe when the kids are a bit bigger.
Rach -
well really!
Rich - What I was thinking is something really simple to look after, that looks after it'self and just needs feeding and regular water changes.
I did really fall in love with the fire shrimps from the pet shop in town, I thought they were ace.

If I got another goldfish, is there anything else I can do to keep the tank clean?
Should I shell out for water testing kit? Plants? Pumps? Fish that clean up after bigger fish?
how about a soft fluffy fish,
how about a soft fluffy fish, no looking after required, that's our sort of pet

I want a robot one like Listers from Red Dwarf.
OK I would throw the fire
OK I would throw the fire shrimp idea out of the window - you probably want some more experience before moving onto marines.
If its something that stays relatively clean looking then forget goldfish - they are pretty much impossible to keep clean.
I would go for some relatively hardy freshwater tropicals if I was you Matt. Most livebearers ie guppies, platys and swordtails. Most of the tetra family. Corydoras for bottom feeding.
Any thoughts just throw them at me. Any size of tank in mind? Those examples I have given you can be kept in a really small setup oh and there are freshwater shrimps available but don't carry the striking colours of the fire shrimp.
Thanks Rich, I'll start
Thanks Rich, I'll start looking into those breeds.
The tank we've got is just a cheap starter tank + pump, bigger than a bowl but not amazingly massive either.
We were looking at ditching that and starting again. Last time we started with a fish - then tank, after we rescued it from a fair with a lucky dart throw, and didn't have time to adapt and treat the water.
This time I'd like to set the tank up first and get the water in, treated and settled before introducing a fish to it.
How do you rate the Pet Shop on Festival park or Mermaid at the bottom of Tunstall's high street for a) quality of fish and
advice?
I think the fire shrimps are
I think the fire shrimps are a little out of my price range but they do look cool.
Well yes you want to mature
Well yes you want to mature your tank with some bacteria before you start putting fish in their. You can buy some stuff to aid you with that or just wait a little longer. To start off it worth just putting fish food in the tank to get the bacteria feeding & breeding in there.. Its worth you getting test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate with any new tank and especially with you not being experienced. As far as the shops go - pets at home - avoid altogether. Mermaid has very limited freshwater fish and they seem to be in very bad condition when I've seen them, they just seem to be an afterthought to the marines. Your best bet around here would be Kidsgrove aquatics, the owner seems to be a bit of a 'salesman' but the other's in there are pretty good and the same with Glovers in Fenton. The best shop I know of near to here is A-z aquatics at barlterley http://www.a-zaquatics.com/index.html
can recommend Glovers in
