Like it or Loath it City Sentral, the new name for the £350million second shopping centre has got people talking
A new regional retail and leisure destination, the scheme is set to transform shopping in Stoke-on-Trent, one of the UK’s top 15 cities*.
Arguments about does Stoke-on-Trent needs another new shopping centre aside, the new name picked at random it would seem London creative agency Underscore "City Sentral" has got many people talking.
Petitions are being passed around, asking if you like the name or not. Polls have appeared on facebook asking people to submit their ideas.
But why are people up in arms? It's because on the spelling mistake in Sentral which people have accused the city of being put in a worse light than it already is.
It you don't like the name, and would like it to be altered, why not join the following online petition and ask the developers, investors and Stoke-on-Trent City Council to go back to the drawing board, pack away the crayons and come up with a memorable and credible name.
Duncan Mathieson, Managing director of Realise Estates has refused to reconsider the name, but is strangley quoted on his website as saying his favorite quote is
“Winning Starts With Beginning”
Well this isn't a great beginning, so maybe this petition would help Duncan to understand why local support will also be key to him and Stoke-on-Trent winning.
Mr Mathieson also goes onto say that a key to a sucessful development is

- Location, location, location and in this market also funding, funding, funding.
- Creating a development that adds to the community and one you look at on completion and feel great pride.

Work has already started on the first phase - a new landmark bus station, which is due to open in 2012.
