What does the Lord Mayor mean to you?

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent what image does that raise in your mind, to me it conjures up an image of a ancient Town Crier but one that doesn’t holler, shout, has no voice just the accessories the funny hat and a big chained medallion.

I know to some it will somehow create the image of a linkage to royalty, that somehow through the Lord Mayor give us access to royalty, the Queen, to grandeur

But these are tough times the Council is currently consulting on its budget plans, one of those proposals is to save £130,000 by removing the Mayors secretary, his car and chauffeur

If we keep his car and chauffeur we will have to raise £50,000 by increasing School Swimming prices (meaning schools may stop swimming lessons) have to Cut £18,000 from Parks Maintenance, Cut £31,000 from early years development officer (reduced support for early years providers) and make a £30,000 reduction in staff who visit and maintain quality for children in care.

If we Cut the Lord Mayors car and chauffeur we can use £90,000 to continue replacing items in the equipment library for children with disabilities and continue the £40,000 contract with NSPCC to support children traumatised by domestic abuse, otherwise these services will have to end.

So yes some will want to see the Lord Mayor continue to open School Fetes, but I would rather see those schools continue to teach our school children to swim, and it could have been in Tunstall Pool had the car and chauffeur been considered last year.

Hi Ian, as you've outlined

Hi Ian, as you've outlined the Lord Mayors office in a time of money to throw at anything is a luxury that is "nice" to have.

Right now, the people of this city have more important things that this money needs spending on.

The Sentinel this weekend reported that former lord mayor is campaigning to save the role, but she doesn't go on to say how "vital" it is to have the lord mayor in place. Surely it's the Chief Exec and head of council who are vital to business.

I'm sure John van der Laarschot, would be far better suited to the role than a lord mayor who only sits in office for one year, and may or may not be the worlds biggest business brain. yes a Lord Mayor can smuse, but right now we don't want any old bungler walking into a room and scuppering deals.

http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/Petition-save-Lord-Mayor-role/story...

Former Lord Mayor Jean Bowers, who served in 2009, is collecting signatures against the proposed cut.

She said: "If we can afford the salaries of the chief executive and his officers, we can afford the Lord Mayor.

"The role is absolutely vital for its work in promoting the city and its industries.

"If we keep on being negative we will not get anywhere."

The petition is listed online on the council's website and there will be an opportunity for people to sign it in person over the coming weeks.
