Removing single yellow lines & parking restrictions from High Street

This is a copy of an e-mail I have sent re my objection to removing the parking restrictions on High Street. I did not see the original letter as explained in the first para. I am exploring how to put together a formal objection.

Re: Removal of single-yellow line waiting restriction High Street, Tunstall

Petition ref SOT14059

Councillor Casework ref SOT13026

Dear Steven Morgan,

As someone who lives on High Street  I very greatly object to these proposals. The house (no. 441 High Street) is split into 2 flats and only one letter (as on this occasion) has been delivered and I did not see the previous one (probably taken by the landlord’s agent), so I had no idea this was other than some ridiculous notion from some people who brought a petition round. I just wonder if you as a Council Officer have looked at the situation, especially at a busy time (3.30pm-6pm) or a time the road is heavily used such as when it rains or the M6 or A500 is closed.

Parking during the day on the west side of High Street will create a bottleneck at all times of the day, as they do now, for larger vehicles, such as buses (8 an hour) and trucks, and those large vehicles who use the bodyworks, heavy haulage and wood supply companies; especially if vehicles are parked on both sides which will be legal. Even more drivers will opt to use the side streets to get through as happens now when the road is blocked or busy.

That endangers many people.

There is already considerable noise from queuing vehicles as the parking restrictions stand now, if parking is allowed all day then even small vehicles will be unable to easily pass each other due to the width of the road. Then there is a safety issue for pedestrians wishing to cross the road, especially children from the school and local families, trying to cross to the bus stop for instance, or ‘hidden’ between parked vehicles. The road will become a bottleneck and effect traffic back both north and south rather than the comparatively free flow it has now.

If for some mad logic this is going to take place then you will have to put a double yellow line on the east side of the A50 to ensure free flowing traffic, businesses on the east side should not be effected as all have large parking spaces. I would prefer that both sides had a double yellow line but know this will not happen.

I feel that this has happened because of parking in the streets leading off High Street by High Street residents causing an inconvenience, however I don’t think they have looked at the wider issues and certainly do not suffer from the noise levels of queuing traffic at busy times. A strictly upheld residents permit scheme would serve to help that issue.

Yours sincerely,

Timothy Diggles

I've not seen these

I've not seen these proposals, I've seen the ones about better parking in town, they aren't related are they?

Anyway, onto you point Tim, are we talking about the top part of hte High Street from the Summerbank Road corner down to Christchurch?

http://www.crashmap.co.uk/Search

I've been looking at the crash data lately a lot in regards to Reginald Mitchell Way, but I was honestly shocked at the number of reported crashes on the stretch of road on the spot I mentioned.

How on earth will removing parking restrictions next to so many junctions where there have been lots of bumps some marked serious, make things better!

Has anyone got a copy of the proposals handy, it would good to get them up onto the site.

As someone who has lived in

As someone who has lived in the high street for over 20 years I strongly agree with the removal of the single yellow line, the area is residential not commercial in origin and therefore should be treated as so. When you have people who park outside your house that do not live there what do you expect the residents to do?

I have received several parking tickets over the years for parking outside my own house!... Is that fair? I do not believe it is, also it may reduce the Vandalism and several attempts thieves have made on our car and my van over the years as I can now park outside my own home!

I agree that a residents permit scheme would be benifical but I believe these have to be paid for by the residents and I do not think I should have to pay to park outside my own house.

Dear Sir/Madam

Re: request to remove single-yellow line waiting restriction – High Street, Tunstall

I have been approached by your local representative Councillor Martin Garner, to consider removing the current waiting restriction as shown on the attached plan.

My letter to you therefore, is to simply advise you of these proposals and to seek your views before revoking the appropriate Traffic Regulation Order.  I would greatly appreciate your written support or rejection of these proposals by 10th February 2012.  A stamped self-addressed envelope is enclosed for that purpose.

Shortly after the end of the consultation period, I will write to you again with the results and my recommendations.  Should you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Yours sincerely,

The removal of the lines were

The removal of the lines were one of the subjects on the agenda at the Tunstall Residents Association meeting last Thursday. The high street parking, CCTV, and the Moonshine off licence were items on Martin Garners agenda, it was a good but very small meeting with alot of comments being made but unfortunately I didnt take any notes so I can not say in honesty who said what and why, or wich way the feelings went incase I put it down incorrectly.

as its a road and not

as its a road and not someones property will the council be selling on permits?

I agree that the lines should

I agree that the lines should be removed, but restictions should stay on the opposite side of the road as it mainly has commercial properties. Why should not residents have the right to park their cars outside their own homes!

And by allowing people to

And by allowing people to park, it would be making a physical restriction on that stretch of road and will slow traffic down and hence cut down on accidents.

I know that people do speed along that part of the High Street, I have seen it!

Imagine a line of parked cars on the kerb of Reg Mitch.......?

Now that would slow the traffic down to below or around 30MPH.

So yes, remove the single yellow lines.
