Unkept messy gardens -

Messy gardens that spoil Estates .

From time to time we have all had different  levels  of messy  gardens - either because   its an easy dumping  ground  for  items if youre having  building work done to the house, or you  arent green fingered and dont know what to do with  the area.

But after a time you  need to clean it up  or take the items to the city skip,

The   messy garden photo-  the family have 3 cars  and  the  rubbish has  been there for 4months  at least.

How can they  turn a blind eye to this sort of mess  every time they leave  or arrive at their house.

If they lived in a council house they would be  told to  clean it up or face an  eviction , but  as its a private house,   council can  just request them to clean the garden up. which  can be ignored .

Your rights (as freeholder or long leaseholder of your house) are against owner of equivalent interest next door- not against the subtenant.
Use LR Online (@£3) to find name/address of that owner, then send him a polite letter requesting HIM (not subtenant) to get work done. Ask for confirmation reply letter within two weeks AND for work to be done within four weeks. No need to threaten any enforcement action (yet).

And on problem neighbours, their post about messy fronts

Weeds, Rubbish and Pests

If weeds or brambles and the like in a neighbour’s garden are causing problems on your side of the property boundary, it can amount to a nuisance which you can report to the Environmental Health Department of your local council who can pursue legal action. More information can be found in the Weeds Act 1959.

Rubbish which has been left piled up in a garden is also cause for concern and could attract things like rats, mice and other pests. Obviously, this then creates a health hazard, with the Risk Of Rat Infestation, as well as attracting a whole host of other unwanted pests. Once again, the Environmental Health Department can forcibly order your neighbours to get rid of any rubbish or weeds if they are breaking the law, and legal action can ensue if they fail to do so.

Messy and overgrown gardens

Messy and overgrown gardens are the bain of my life ! When customers ask me to design and create a garden with gravel and paving,

TThe next door always  has a messy overgrown garden with ten foot high weeds, you lay all this nice gravel a few months later weeds are germinating and trying to grow into the membrane.. uncut garden weed spores spread, if you have a nice lawn and wonder why weeds are coming up, you might want to look at the neighbours.

mind you my front could do with a tidy lol, just waiting for scrap to collect the trailer before it ges a makeover for the summer..

We had similar issues on our estate.

We were informed that the correct course of action is to report concerns to the Envirmental Crime Unit via Stoke On Call (01782 234234).

Each area has a dedicated Investigator. We were informed that action can be taken, even if the property is privately owned.

RE: the family  who own the messy garden  are really nice people ...

Hi dereth,

Since you view your neighbors as 'nice' which I translate to mean they are 'reasonable' people then maybe it would be much simpler to talk to them first.

Being 'nice' people I'm sure they would be embarrassed/appalled that they unintentionally caused problems for you.

At this point, tell them your worries about rats nesting in the pile of garbage and that it would involve more effort, stress, time, and expense in the long-run to clean-up if the pile gets more overwhelming in size and if the council gets involved. Let them know, that you want to maintain good neighbor relations and do not want to make the problem bigger, but if more homes in the neighborhood just allow messy frontyards, then everybody would suffer (in terms of health and reduced property value)

Regards,

Mark P.

the garden in question- the photo,  the  same family have never done anything to the front garden - its always has been unkept for the past 20 years  plus.

so having a polite word with them  would not embarrasse them  thinking they are causing a problem , no    it would not  accur to them.

the owner 2 months ago mentioned that they were going to hire a skip for the rubbish as they had just  had some work  done to the house-hence the building  type  rubbish on the  garden.

everyone has a different  view point of  what  a tidy garden is-

front gardens can be kept tidy  without having to have it as a show garden,

there is a growing number of  house holds on this estate that allow  the gardens  to  become  rubbish  tips , because of the amount of houses  now that  are rented ,

I think we have a massive rubbish problem in Goldenhill there is stuff dumped everywhere latest iis a mattress just past the chicken farm on broadfield road, I canot believe that people will not take and dispose of their rubbish correctly and dump it in the public places. At least the rubbish in the picture has been left at their property and not fly tipped anywhere so that is a good thing.

Lets really hope that the fly tipping in this area can soon be eradicated, and offenders bought to book.
