Water mains burst on Tunstall's High Street - Picture Gallery - Update Traffic LIghts in place.

Motorists were today forced to slow down outside LIDL as endless gallons of water poured onto the High Street.

Hopefully the water people can fix the problem before a hose pipe ban is put in place.

I am sure you will not be

I am sure you will not be suprised to read the Mains water Pipe is still gushing out all over the high street no doubt the water board will arrive tomorrow when people are going to/from work and install trafic lights causing yet another hold up whilst they discuss the best way to deal with the problem. If they do arrive in the morning this will be 36+?hours since I saw them put a warning cone and small barriers around the burst whilst I was on my way to work at 7.30am on Sat.

How long does it take for the

How long does it take for the water board to respond to a mains burst pipe this is disgusting how many thousands of gallons of water have been wasted. Glad it is not a sewer pipe that had burst we would be in the s--t then.

I have just walked past the

I have just walked past the new water feature it is getting worse, what started as a leak in the middle of the road is now posing a threat to motorists just seconds before I got off my bus there had been an accident involving 4 Cars. One slowed down when he hit the water but the 3 following didnt and all 4 merged into one it was like a domino effect thankfully no one was hurt and they are only minor bumps but this need not have happened. the state of the road in now alot worse than it was yesterday the power of the water is breaking up the road somthing needs doing before someone gets hurt.

I think you are been a little

I think you are been a little harsh, just because the water is wasting does not mean Severn Trent are not doing anything about it, it not as easy as just going onto a main road and digging a hole and repairing the leak, there a  process involved that relies or other organizations.

1. The road is owned by the council, so you have to apply to the council for a licence to dig there road, they have to give permission (not just Severn Trent but anybody who wants to dig a road or a footpath have to have a excavation licence (notice) from the council.  They have 100's of these everyday to process from other utility companies.

2. Traffic management has to be approved also by the council because they own the road (again you have to apply for a notice to put temporary traffic lights up)

3. The risk assessment for the water been shut off, as a full shut will be needed to install a new valve. So is there any problems with the shut.

A. How many properties will be affected (no water)

B. How long will the water be off for.

C. Are there any sensitive customers on the shut i.e. dialysis patients... hospitals... care homes etc etc.

D. It is also Ramadan so Muslims need water between sunset and sunrise as this is the only time they can drink and eat during Ramadan. (so job can not be done in evening/night)

The job so i can see was reported Friday/Saturday so the council will only have limited resources dealing with licences been issued over the weekend I don't work for Severn Trent, but i do work for another water company and we have limited resources at weekends.

I just think you need to be aware that its not as easy as it looks there are loads of issues water companies have repairing leaks, all in all the value you get from your water company is great compared to your other utilities you pay for... it's about 1/3 the price of your gas and electric, and for that cost which is probably around the same price you pay for your mobile phone each month, you get not only get the water that comes through your taps/shower but also the waste (sewage) this is taking away and processed cleaned and returned day after day week after week year after year...

Hope some understand this and may feel a little less annoyed by whats going on... in my job i get people moaning all the time, as they mainly just jump to conclusions about how they think it should be done, rather than simply asking the question of can you explain the process or can you explain why you are doing what your doing........

Thanks for the explanation,

Thanks for the explanation, this makes for interesting reading you dont really think all of this goes on in the background but can I ask now the job has been compleated (Thursday) how long will it be before the Pelican lights are turned back on so I can cross the road in some safety.

Hi Sue, Again this would be

Hi Sue, Again this would be down to the council, as part of the initial risk assessment done , you would identify if things such as pelican crossing bus stops etc need to be suspended, if they are going to be in the traffic management zone then they would of been suspended, Severn Trent I believe as part of the notice would of requested that the pelican crossing needed to be suspended, the council would of sent one of there engineers to carry this work out, on completion of the job the the notice would be stopped this is normally done electronically (these will be closed a.s.a.p as any over runs on your notice which are normally 3-5 days incurs a fine which is normally a few thousand pound)  this in turn informs the council that the works have been completed and that should of triggered the council to come out and turn the pelican lights back on... but the council are a law upon themselves (I mean who polices the police) there generally too busy taking money and imposing fines, i would give them a call and ask the question, if your unsure of who to call I'd give Severn Trent a call and ask them to contact the council as they should know who to call to inform them of this... But as it's your health and safety at risk, I'd probably call both as the more people who are aware of the issue the better the chance something might be done... hope this has answered your question.
