Fenton War Memorial under threat - Supporters of the campaign need your help

view counter

We have a campaign to save a wonderful memorial to the Great War 1914-1918, situated in Fenton, Staffordshire.

The memorial, which is made from Minton-Hollins tiles and is the only one of its kind in the world, contains the names of 498 local men who gave the ultimate sacrifice - for many it is their grave, The community needs to raise £500,000 to buy the building which houses the memorial (Fenton's former town hall) from its owners, the Ministry of Justice, who are selling it off for private development.

Importantly: the building is not listed (its application has been rejected) and the memorial cannot be moved as it is embedded into a wall (this has been verified by the Lord Chancellor).

The campaign, which is fully supported by Stephen Fry and Ben Elton of Blackadder fame (among others), has been earmarked by a major TV channel for a documentary about local people working to save their heritage.

As owners of a gallery in the area we have agreed to organise an art auction to help save the building / memorial. This is a CALL OUT to the global artistic community to say WE NEED YOUR HELP to ensure the memory of these men is preserved. We are attempting to source original pieces of art if possible but ANY donations or assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated and form part of the campaign's promotion on social media and, hopefully, the press and media, unless you advise otherwise.

It is intended that the auction takes place late November / early December, so ideally we would need any works / donations by late October to allow adequate time to promote them. If this will be an issue we can still accept donations up till the first week of February 2014: in this instance the works would go on general sale in the gallery with all proceeds going to the campaign fund.

Please find out more about the campaign here

Hoping you can help.

Kind regards
