This is from a reminiscence project I did a couple of years ago- interviewing 4 different age groups all live in Burslem

I have lived in this area for 53years; my husband is from this area too.
I lived in Cobridge park, either on the swings or just hanging around with my friends-Cobridge Park is a no go area now.
Im very sad to see Burslem now, its has declined from the once busy shopping area.
I worked part-time in Burslem –Pit Street East, it was handy-very close to home and i was able to be at home with the children too.
The shops that i can remember are
Freeman Hardy and Willis-shoes
Co-Op
Martins
Cadmans’s electrics
Playland-toys
Pleasure Treasure-model trains
Liptons
Cliff-butchers
Bestwishes-card shop
In the indoor market-
Second hand record stall.
Cafe
Slakes
Hat and bedding stall
Books & sweets
Oatcakes.
Market was always busy when the children were smaller they are 21 and 18 now.

My shopping day was always Friday, and she could always do a full shop in Burslem, now she has to shop further afield, “there’s is no chose in Burslem now”

She attended Cobridge Church School ,it was knocked down years ago-the vicars house is there now. she remembers having to go to sleep at the school, midday, she didn’t want too. from there –it was North Road school. Moorland Junior School., Park road for 2 years then finally to Moorland high school the uniform was Royal blue skirt, pale blue shirt all from Lewis’s.

Celebrations in the town- there was Pat Collins Fair, Wakes Week, and the Sunday School anniversaries.
She is proud of her roots in Burslem, but wishes that there were more houses and a better range of shops in the area to make Burslem busy again.
