Two of the residents have spoken to me regarding a BT engineer coming out last week, he started lifting the manhole covers and messing inside them, one neighbour could then not use their landline, the other had a huge drop with his broadband speed, I have just done a speed test, and it looks like I have a 56K modem.

Ring BT to test the line, and other checks

Bt can do a system check on the line, they have to cut you off to do it, so triple make sure you get them to ring you back afterwards.

This test checks the lines into the house, the exchange, it's a bit like a submarine pinging and waiting for response times and quality of the returned data.

If this checks out to be ok, you did say you checked all of your wires after reading about that BT broadband health check article on BBC's site.

1. Check all the filters - even on the sky box
2. Is your router overworked, sometimes a reboot does a world of good
3. Virus scan your pc (if you've not got one, check out the free virus checker AVG, I've been using it for years now, and it's not let me down - http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe )
4. If your using a wireless router and wireless usb dongle it's worth checking the router with a cable from router to pc (remove usb dongle) to see how speedy it is. Could be that the wireless in your pc/laptop/router is faulty
5. DANGEROUS - in xp and vista press the windows key and R and the same time and type msconfig, then look for the tabs called start up programs, and just see if theres anything dodgy. If your unsure of the program, don't switch it off just yet, look it up on the internet or post your query up here.
6. Your probably right, it is a BT fault, so discount all of the above.

Oh yeah, one last one, lets call in 2.5 - check that you've not got the BBC's iPlayer, Skys pc anytime, ITV's player and so on as they all work of peer to peer networking, so your pc will be acting as a relay, so people will be download from your computer, it's not just you doing the downloading - didn't know that did ya - scarey.

Still getting much reduced speed

Noticed 10 days ago that Broadband seemed slow so did speed check at http://www.speedtest.net/ download was only 596Kbps. Fortunately I have retained a speed test history, back in Jan 2008 I was getting 2234Kbps and in October 2007 3666Kbps. So emailed Sky support 4 days ago detailing stats, completed their standard questionnaire (how many telephone sockets in house? how many phones in sockets? all sockets filtered? check stats at Master socket etc.) 2 days ago. Came home this evening to find no internet connection an an automated message on my answerphone from Sky telling me that they had done something to my broadband line. After a couple of router reboots and a wait of 30mins connection restored but speed dropped to 448Kbps down and 328Kbps up. Rang Sky support and they check my line speed and opened a new ticket for their CST team to investigate. I hope to hear their response in a couple of days. I'll let you know what they say.

Anyone else on Sky Mid 8Mbps on Swallows Rise side willing to share line stats/speed?

Phone line problem

It must be a line problem, the line runs up the RMW, onto the high street, I remember when the line was first connected, the high street manhole was under water, there is a cable main junction box on the high street, why cannot we have a bit of competition between BT and Virgin, maybe if everyone complained to oftel, something may get done.

Contacted BT

I have contacted BTs complaints department, and got an automated response, but they will look into the broadband problem.

Here we go I contacted BT,

Here we go
I contacted BT, they tested the line, and say no problem, contacted Tiscali, they say no problem.
I have done trials using an XP machine, also a Vista machine, I have used a netgear modem router, a draft N modem router, and a usb modem, that came from the ISP. I have used, not only the master socket, but all sockets in the house. I have shut off all non essential equipment, and taken any appliances that use a telephone connection out of the equation.
I have disabled software, such as firewall, anti virus, vistas sidebar etc.
The result was there has not been any difference in the speed, in fact the best result I acheived was with the old usb modem, with vista, with a 10 metre extension cable coming from the fourth bedroom, which is obviously an extension in itself. what next?

Have a look at this yahoo

Have a look at this yahoo answers page about broadband connection problems.

You never know some of these might have something to do with. Funny how the iPlayer crops up, because it's peer to peer software you are at risk of your computer being used as a relay server for all of downloads.

If your not using the iplayer (if you have it installed) goto your tray icons, find it and right click and switch it off.

I feel such a dozy sod, all

I feel such a dozy sod, all those tests were for nothing, my wife recently negotiated with Tiscali, for a better deal, or we were going to quit, got a better deal, so stayed with them, I went to send them an email, but needed my account details, so I logged on to their members page, got my account details, and noticed that they had not upgraded the package, and find I was on a 512k package, still waiting a reply, probably do not work weekends.

And the moral of this story

And the moral of this story is: don't threaten tiscali that your leaving, they are really nasty bar-stewards. Bet they thought if your going to leave we'll just make life unpleasent untill you finally did leave. Try 02

Broadband free for 6 months

I've just had this emailed through to me about Sky Broadband's latest offer.
Free Sky broadband for 6 months

Is anyone with sky at the minute for their broadband, and is the service any good?
