A strategic link from the A527 to the A50, A500 and M6, thereby relieving Tunstall town centre of heavy through traffic and improving access to proposed industrial and residential development sites to the north of Tunstall.

Elected Mayor, Mark Meredith, said: “This is a vital part of the regeneration already underway in the north of the city. It will relieve congestion and take traffic away from the town centre. The conditional approval of funding is another milestone towards the construction of the long awaited bypass.”

Gillian Merron said:

“By relieving Tunstall town centre of heavy through traffic, the Northern Bypass will allow pedestrian and traffic management improvements, reduce accidents, and assist measures to encourage cycling and improve public transport. It will also improve access to proposed industrial and residential development sites.

“The £3.127m of funding towards the cost of the scheme demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving the road network, tackling congestion, improving safety and aiding regeneration.”

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has welcomed the news that an appeal against the building of the Tunstall Northern By-pass has been dismissed.

Three judges sitting in the High Court dismissed the appeal clearing the way for the long-awaited road to be built.

Funding for the road was first made available in 1997 but a series of legal challenges have held up the scheme.

David Mercer, Acting Assistant Director for Highways and Transportation, said: "We are delighted that yet a further challenge to the long awaited bypass has been resolved in our favour. The appeal has been dismissed. We are now looking forward to studying the judgement in detail and subject to confirmation of funding from the Secretary of State, hope work will begin in early summer 2006. It is expected to take around a year to complete."
