Pick-a-lane roundabout - Roundabout at Reg Mitchell/Chatterley Valley (Stoke - can't people drive other than in a straight line)

I do a fair bit of driving and I'm always reassured that when I get home, I know I can always find some of the worst in he potters.

Take roundabouts for example. It's a little known fact that cars can go AROUND a roundabout, rather than straight over it.

Now I'm sure this has effected everyone on the estate, and doubt most of you do it anyway, but when driving from the a500, and you get to the first big roundabout, you'll notice that their are 3 lanes.

1. The inside lane - for turning left down towards the gypsies and talk, and also for going straight on (in the inside lane)

2. The middle lane, for going straight on,  middle lane, should lead you into the outside lane of reg mitch.

3. The outside lane - for turning right in the roundabouts outside lane, heading towards the cemetery.

Sounds straight forward doesn't it?

Ok

This is how it really is.

  1. Inside lane, for turning left, or for driving into the middle (or sometimes outside roundabout lane, and then the inside lane of the road.
  2. The middle lane, for driving in the outside or the middle lane, and either enter the inside lane or the outside lane of the upwards stretch or Reginald Mitchell way.
  3. Cars turning right to go up by the cemetery or to overtake the other two cars besides them across the round about.

It's really messed up, and when you peep your horn at someone to inform them they've just crossed lanes, cut you up, made you screech to a halt, they either give you the V's or get you at the next roundabout, as your turning into our estate.

Ok - so what can be done.

In most cases a lobotomy might just cure them of their dodgy driving ways, for the rest of you, maybe if the council painted some big arrows that actually pointed into the lane you should be traveling.

Come, lets have a discussion about this, cause I know it's not just me thats cluesless what lane they really should be in on that stretch of road.

Multi skilled ( not )

Congratulations to the driver of a silver 52 plate Golf. At about five past four today exited Swallows Rise negotiated the small roundabout and proceeded to RMW whilst texting. You did however fail to see myself walking my dog the lady with the shopping or the two school girls attempting to cross the road.

My take on the roundabout,

My take on the roundabout, is to get into the middle lane and be prepared to be pushed near to the outside lane half way round, when you get into the right hand lane, slow right down to stop people overtaking especially bikes, take deep breaths before you hit death roundabout.

I've been doodling.....

Have an idea

If when approaching the roundabout, get into the right hand lane, go completely around the roundabout, cars coming up should give way, you should then be able to chose the lane you want.

peep in advance

if u peep in advance other motorist will know you are there. it also saves time when you do get cut up

Pick-A-Lane-Any-Lane (PALAL)

Pick-A-Lane-Any-Lane (PALAL) Roundabout

Silver Jaguar Xtype, 54 reg I think- driver was a complete 'arse' hole (in the style of father whoeverhewas on father Ted) on PALAL roundabout the other night. I was in the midle approach lane, with the intention of staying in the middle lane on the roundabout (which i think is correct??). Mr 'I know better in my jag' was in the right lane, clearly marked to turn right. However, he actually wanted to go straight on, and THEN move over to the left lane at 'our' roundabout!

I put my foot down cos I knew what was going to happen, and he simply did the same. What an arrogant little man with no road sense, or even common courtesy to other road users.

The problem we have is that is we do try to let them know their errors, we then end up turning into the estate, and they know where we live!

If the council wanted to cure the problem, all they need to do is continue the lines from the approach road onto the roundabout itself. That would be simply, and clearly indicate the lane layout.

UPDATED: I'd like to know

UPDATED: I'd like to know how many accidents have happened on that roundabout because people haven't got a clue what they are meant to do. And the ones that do know what they are doing seem to be putting themselves at risk doing it.

We could do with someone with some spare time to look into this. I'd offer, but I'm up to my eye balls. If any one has a couple of day time hours where maybe they can liase with the council on this. It would be best to get them signed onto this site and view the comments first hand

You know, I really miss my

You know, I really miss my 4x4, big old landcruiser VX 4.2 diesel turbo, those were the days, - I knew I was always in the correct lane... or perhaps no one wanted to argue? Left lane is for Goldenhill, KFC is a dead end, no pun intended. Yet many people go into the middle lane then left up to Goldenhill. Why? because they haven't got the patience to queue in the left lane. And the opening of the new by-pass doesn't seem to have stopped the queuing to the KFC RoB at 5pm.

I have a feeling that the

I have a feeling that the highways agency in S-O-T is just having a laugh with us. They build the roundabouts (slightly off line with the roads around them) and then think "where shall we put the lanes to go and cause as much confusion as possible?" They've done the same with the A50/A500 roundabout. You always have to watch what all the other drivers are planning on doing and using your psychic abilities to avoid them.

Seeing as we have a driving

Seeing as we have a driving instructor on our estate, Kev Slater, I thought I'd ask him about the pick a lane any lane roundabout.

He's confirmed that this is the correct route over the road about.

Does anyone know any one in the council or police force that might be able to suggest a way of solving the problems on this roundabout. Maybe a full page advert in the sentinel, or some decent road signs might help.

Yes i can confirm that the

Yes i can confirm that the diagram is correct, however this is a very common problem caused by speed and i feel it will only get worse now that the new road is open. The most worrying problem for me is the speed that people drive approaching the roundabouts (it should be 30mph). I only hope that the authorities take action before there is a serious accident.

Had another near death

Had another near death experience again tonight. Coming up RMW turn right at the focus roundabout to come into the estate. Only to see hurtling down RMW a LDV minibus emlazoned with Zcarz private hire logo. The drive of minibus realises that he can not stop so puts his foot down harder. I by this time have stopped on the roundabout as the thought of a couple of tons of minibus entering my car via the passanger door does not fill me with happiness and I do not wish to enter Elysuim yet. So if any of you nice people out there have the chance of a ride in a Z carz private hire or fancy getting home safely call another taxi company or catch the bus.

Did you peep him, only to have him treat you like you were in the wrong?

No I did not peep him

No I did not peep him pointless he new what he had done. Gave him the main beam angry flash instead.Plus did you not realise all taxis have right of way all of the time.Well they do in London.

congletonvets's picture

Of course, we do have our

Of course, we do have our own taxi driver on the estate, so in terms of looking at getting home safely, we could all decide to use him. Although he lives opposite, I couldnt possibly think what the firm is called, but at least he might charge less to drop off on our estate, if he's on his way home too....?!

Whilst trying to find breaking distances on the internet

I found a link to direct.gov's dvla pages
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_070338

It's all about how to use a roundabout, should be enlightening for some people.

I'll have a look if there's a page about indicators - you know those blinky lights you see from time to time.
