Can anyone recommend a Gym

By

view counter

I've been a member of Alsager Gym for about five years now. It's membership is fairly cheap, but it's just so far away.

By the time the kids are off to bed, I lose all motivation to get up and drive all the way to alsager.

Does anyone go to a gym locally? Is it any good?

Web Monkey, Come for FX

Web Monkey,
Come for FX Leisure in Congleton! I now its a distance, but its prabably motivation that you are struggling with- like I am.
I know I;m more liekly to go if I'm meeting someone else there!
Could be there for 630 am, before the kids are even up!

Dimensions gym is good, and

Dimensions gym is good, and quite cheap. Doesn't have a huge range of equipment, but if you're happy with free weights, a cuople of lifting things, running machines and cycling machines then it could do you

Web Monkey's picture

Cheers fellas, Dimensions

Cheers fellas, Dimensions doesn't sound to bad, as it's only a few minutes away, I could probably motivate myself to do that.

Does it get mega busy?

Sorry James, I couldn't motivate my self into getting to congelton gym, just to far. But you are right motivation is the key, me and Mrs MWeb Monkey used to go together before the kids came along.

Maybe if we put a few work benches and assault type apparatus down in the paddock we could all motivate each other and then finish with a BBQ.

Forest Park had a exercise

Forest Park had a exercise circuit, sure you could find some grants for same sort of community scheme, include cyclting ansdyour onto a winner with councils millions to spend on cycling in the City

We had a "organic gym" down

We had a "organic gym" down Birchenwood - kidsgrove, when I was a young lad. More recently went for a walk around Forest park and they had similar equipment dotted about, it was a bit like going on the a toned down krypton factor.

Theres plenty of room on our open space for some equipment, imagine getting up in the morning, going for a jog, some reps on the monkey bars, steps, some stretches climb over a few things couple of laps around the open space.

Not a bad suggestion. Pity you can only get the grant through cycling though, you could start getting the nation fit with some simple equipment. Might save a few NHS bills in the years to come.

I'm a member of Greens down

I'm a member of Greens down by Britannia Stadium, I like it down there, they've got a pool, kids are allowed, but only at certain times, which suits me. It is at the opposite end of the city, but it's near to work, so i go on the way home.

Re the money for cycling, I

Re the money for cycling, I was part of a local cycling club for a few years, and even now, it's impossible to get money out of the council for it - even though they seem to have claimed to have raised money for the club that the club themselves did all the hard work for, the council just seem to be stopping them spending it.

Sounds like the open space.

Sounds like the open space.

If you havent already, get

If you havent already, get in touch with Dudson House, Hope Street, they will be able to help with what funds are ready to bid for, if the you cant get any of the councils £5million for cycling. Theres the Greening for Growth fund that funded the Tunstall Wigwam, each ward now has I believe £100,000 to bid for. But Dudson house should be able to put yoou on mailing list and you'll get newsletter on all funds you can bid for.

Looking on this site,

Looking on this site, noticed some nice equipment, what make for a good circuit training area down on the open space or in the paddock.

And with the council facing joint 12/13/14 place in the obesity leagues, I wonder if they've got any schemes for this sort of equipment in public areas.

Bet some of these could be knocked out for a fraction of the cost. Maybe Popeye could knock out something built out of oil drums.

Gyms Within the area

I am a member of Esporta which is an extremely good gym. I have also been a member of Total Fitness in the past and would also give this gym an extremely good rating, the only issue is the location. Both Gyms offer;

- Classes - Spinning, Bodypump, Yoga etc......
- Full exercise programmes, set out to meet your requirements.
- Swimming pools - Children are allowed, Total Fitness has a sepcial childrens pool.
- All types of cardio and ristance machines.

etc.....

Community fitness in the open space

Hey up Matt if you are looking for a good workout than the open space is the place to go!!!

Exercise One picking up litter and dog poo.

Exercise Two Empty park bins when full

Exercise Three sweep play area and sports court of broken glass.

Exercise Four cut the grass with a lawn mower (not petrol or electric)

Only kidding Total Fitness is OK got a good pool, sauna and steam room and plenty of nurses use it too.

Local Gym for Web Monkey

Aye up,

If you go down Tunstall High Street, down Brownhills Road, down Davenport Street (same as Brownhills Road - but the street name changes) and just past the newish pelican crossing there is a gym just on the right - it's a bit hard to spot the building from the road but they have a large canvas sign at the turning to the car park. I can't recommend it myself (not my sort of thing - brisk walks only) but my little sister has been going there for years, so it must be ok. I think it might be called "Matrix" but I can't be sure. Failing that you can take a run around Westport Lake, local rumour has it that it's a mile if you circumnavigate both lakes. Hopes this helps. - Spooky BedHair

UPDATE Local Gym for Web Monkey

Looking at Yell.com, I guess the place I was thinking of is -

21st Century Leisure
11, Davenport St, Burslem, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, ST64LJ

Tel: 01782 811698

I think "Matrix" may have been a previous incarnation of the same building - that's what comes of being so old.

Yippee - double digits on the points - can I cash them in at Asda? Smile

Web Monkey's picture

Thanks for the updates

I was really impressed with esporta yesterday (didn't go into the gym, kiddies party), but they had a massive amount of equipment. Looks like you don't have to wait around for the one you want to go on.

If the Alexandra Square gym is cheap enough I'd seriously consider this one, based souly on location. That was the worst thing about driving down to Alsager Gym, was the distance, it was just to far away.

Does amyone go to Dimensions gym?(I might as well get the full round up) How do you rate it?

Thanks

Matt

Have you considered 21st

Have you considered 21st Century Leisure (next to West Port Lake)

They do all sorts of things down there.  open from about 6.30 a.m. till late at night x 7 days a week.  Even have a ladies only zone, small swimming pool, sauna and jaccuzi and various classes.

If you pop down there they will gladly show you around.  Very reasonable rates.

Well worth a look

21st Century Leisure ( next

21st Century Leisure ( next to Westport Lake)

I was really nervous about even going through the front doors of a gym, but a friend recommended 21st Century and booked me in for a free trial. I felt comfortable as soon as I walked in and was greated by a lovely lady who put me at ease straight away. I loved it for me the ladies gym was great it means I can start off in there and once I build my confidence I will venture into one of the mixed gyms. It's very friendly and has a lot of facilities to choose from, swimming, jacuzzi, separate saunas, spinning, aerobics, yoga and much more. and once you have paid your membership it's all included.

I joined straight away there was no pressure I was just so comfortable in there.

Hi Matt I dont know if you

Hi Matt I dont know if you are sorted with the Gym thing?, I really missed my swimming when Tunstall pool closed but didnt bother going anywhere else for several months then just by chance I got talking to the girls at work who go to D.W on Scotia Rd. I went along for a nose and was immpressed so I joined up basicaly to swim but I have been to some of the classes and use the other facilities, they have a large Gym, Jacuzzis,Sauna and a nice Cafe. The memberships vary in price but once you are a member you get to use all the stuff they have got, and they give you a choise of payments I oppted to pay by direct debit monthly as I didnt know if I would stick it out, there is an innitial Joining Fee but at intervals during the year they waver that Fee to get people to join. I enjoy it, it is easy to get to, friendly, with plenty of car parking space.
