Tunstall murder, febuary 12th 2001
Nikki Higgins was beaten and strangled to death in February last year in Hanley and her killer is still being tracked by Staffordshire Police.
Detectives now hope that people from South Cheshire who travel to Hanley to use prostitutes may have seen something and can help with the investigation.
Sgt Carl Ratcliffe said anyone coming forward would be treated sympathetically and would be spoken to in confidence.
Nikki, aged 23, was found dead at the back of Tunstall Cemetery on February 12 last year and Sgt Ratcliffe explained that she had been last seen in a large booted, dark blue or black saloon similar to a Vauxhall Carlton in Century Street.
It is believed the car's registration began with E or F and ended in NBY and Nikki was found with roofing bitumen on her body. Police believe the killer might have had this on his clothes at the time.
Sgt Ratcliffe added: "We are trying to get people to make the link between the car description, the use of prostitutes and the bitumen.
"At the end of the day Nikki was somebody's daughter who was murdered brutally and she deserves justice," he added.
An appeal on Crimewatch has already proved successful in gleaning leads, which are currently being followed up.
DCI Carl Brookes is leading the enquiry and added: "We have had no calls from punters themselves and would urge these people to call us in order that we can speak with them discreetly and sensitively as opposed to having us turn up at their family home or place of work. "
nikki we leave in a world of decay and i hope you are somewhere better for we remember you just for today.
