Web Cams

Talking to Sharky some time back he mentioned that a resident was thinking of pointing a web cam at the park, and publishing the images up to the web.

Because web cams aren't good at zooming the only implications would be that someone could watch when the park was occupied, that shouldn't be watching (you know what I mean).

On the other hand, parents would know where there kids were, who was there before they went.

Another good spot for a web cam would be pointing UP Reginald Mitchell Way towards High street roundabout. People would be able to check the site to see how traffic was before they left home, or if residents wanted to pop out, and they wanted to check.

We'd need volunteer for these web cam projects, but it would be great if residents could jump on this project.

I think we'll also need some IT advice, about whats the best/cheapest cam (can you get night vision for cameras), what else would be needed, such as broadband, routers etc.

If anyone could lend a hand, advice, suggest a location I think we could have some fun.

Apologies, I started typing

Apologies, I started typing a reply to this ages ago, then got sidetracked. Here goes, I'll try to remember what I was thinking.

I think it would be tricky to do, owing to the requirement to get permission to use images of people or their property (obviously the authorities get round this in the interest of public safety). CCTV being covered by data protection legislation etc would hinder the project. Good idea, but I think it probably stops there- sorry!

Getting night cameras may be

Getting night cameras may be cost prohibitive and most day/night cameras will only work up to 25m away at night.

Spying on a neighbour or a playground may also have legal implications but from a technology point of view, it is very simple and relatively cheap.

All you need to do is hook up a suitable camera with built in web server to your existing broadband, open up the "ports" on your router/firewall and hey presto you can browse the image via any other web browser from anywhere in the world (username and password permitting).

There are loads of these devices for sale on the internet/ebay, one of which is

Ah b*m (sorry sharky) I was really hoping this was something that could take off.

I see why most webcams are of skylines now.

How about traffic cam?

Cheers Ghost for the technical heads up, I was thinking of fitting a web cam to the front door, as our lounge is on the back, and it might make life easier.

Whilst we are on the subject, any body have any favorite web cam sites (clean ones please)
