Oat Cake fillings

By

view counter

The Sentinel are running a oatcake filling competition to find the best fillings to go inside.

So this weekend will see me in the kitchen trying to come up with some new ideas for fillings.

Not sure if smarties and buttons will work for adults but the kids will love it.

Keep you posted on how well it goes down.

If you've got a favourite head on over to the sentinel.

A couple of nights ago I made a curry and married both Oatcake and a few lumps of chicken, cheese and curry sauce into a single oatcake. It was gorgeous, a proper tastebud treat.

I've used oatcakes with curry in the past and very good they are too,

I did read that oatcakes originated from attempts top recreate a chappati/naan bread.

Yeah, I'd heard that too. From that basis I'm amazed that more counties have the same tradition after old soldiers returned home from the India. I wonder why just Stoke.

mmmmm Oatcakes, being a kiwi

mmmmm Oatcakes, being a kiwi I had never had this delicacy before and love them. Have tried both savoury (my favourite) and sweet fillings.
My son (who used to live here), always got me to take dozens over to NZ when I visited, even got my daughter liking them. They are truly just a Stoke on Trent phenomenon and long may it continue.
I even tried making my own when I live in Australia, didn't do too bad and found making them on the BBQ was best way.

I wonder if there is a business opportunity here. I can see it now. A franchise chain of outlets selling oatcakes and deals struck with super markets.

I have tried sweet and

I have tried sweet and savoury but I always go back to my fave, bacon and cheese or sausage and cheese, but they have to be oatcakes from an oatcake shop I dont like the thick rubbery ones you can buy in supermarkets, I go up to Highlane and get 6 half doz packets at a time and freeze them, I have always got Oatcakes in my freezer. When my stepson Andrew comes up from Hertfordshire he always takes some back with him. You can also get them Vaccume packed for an extra charge so that you can pop them in a jiffy bag and send them in the post this I have done loads of times when Andrew was at university.

Warm some oatkackes then

Warm some oatkackes then spread them with butter and some dairylea light on then roll them up absolutely lovely. Or warm oatcakes with Jam & peanut butter on are also divine.

Another good trick is to use them instead of nan breads and dip them into curry Smile
