You will definately have to

You will definately have to book for weekends often several weeks in advance. Weekdays are not so busy though. They do a set price for starters and main meal. So prices are reasonable. Drinks can be a bit pricy though but no more so than most resturants of this standard.

The Church is good, went for

The Church is good, went for a meal there a few months ago with some friends, had a really good time, but yes, you do need to book, as it was very busy.

Another one is The Old Plough, Etruria, on the way in to Hanley, again, you need to book, as it's very popular, but they do an absolutely fantastic steak, and REAL chips, made from fresh potatoes, none of those frozen ones. Can you tell I'm a fan??

The Shalimar in Newcastle

The Shalimar in Newcastle always sets my taste buds on fire.

I've traveled the land, and many countries in search of something as tasty but the only meals that comes close were in a indian in Leeds, where the nann breads were the size of zulu shields.

Eating out, well, this is

Eating out, well, this is why I really do have an enjoyable hobby!!!

Best chinese I've ever been to is the Happy Garden Chinese restaurant in Congleton. Found it by accident, as it's only about 50metres away from the practice. Excellent food, very friendly service, and good prices.

Best Thai (by far!) is Blue Chilli in Newcastle. We've followed this family through 3 sets of premises, as Drew was at college with the guy who is one of the owners. Fabulous food, good service, but pricier than the Chinese.

Either are worthy of a visit for special occasions.

I'm keen to try the Church now- never heard of it before, but sounds like a good place to try.

We could 'invite' restaurants to advertise on this site, but only those we are happy to reccommend!

Thai - I've not tried the Blue Chilli, but I do like The Art of Siam, also in Newcastle. (opposite Specsavers) Is the Blue Chilli the one on the roundabout? Used to be No 1 Kings Street?

That's the one. The people

That's the one. The people who run it are lovely, and used to rent a function room in a pub, to do food there, then they moved to another pub, before setting up Blue Chilli- amazing place- beautiful setting etc etc...

I went in there once, when it was no1 kings street, (works do, so I wasn't paying) so I know the settings great, may have to try it at some point.

Dawn expanding this thread

Dawn expanding this thread to take aways now as you have had so many replies. We had a take away with the Popeye clan last night. We used Massoms Massala who are situated on Congleton Rd Butt Lane. Having Had a few good eat in meals there we thought it would be ok. But bit of a let down. Would only give it six out of ten. Reasons as follows

Price reasonable £46 for four of us.

Service good . It was ready when I arrived to pick it up.

Starters Papadoms damp not crips.
Onion Bhajjis tough not easy to cut
Butter de fly king prawn poor batter & greasy.

Main Nan breads cold. All main meals were nice though

Take aways can be a problem.
You never know how long it has stood before they get it to you.
We have had Takeaways for years from The New Royal Balti in Audley, and then it went down bank, so we stopped having them. We have tried them recently but no improvement. Even their sit down meals aren't as good as they used to be.
We now use Rose of India in Newcastle, and must admit that their food has been consistantly good.

I agree with you on this one but I did order it at seven twenty and they said it would be ready for eight and I collected it myself. So I would not expect for example the nan bread to be cold.

Barbara Precious Pals I've

Barbara
Precious Pals I've had two meals with family at the Taybarn on the A34, Buffet, all you can eat, £7.95 per person, Although we had to wait an hour for the table it was well worth it. My Dad(who's 84) ate four courses! soup, fish & chips, a carvery and then a pudding. The choice is wonderful. Cheaper for kids, but plenty of choice for them too. burgers, pizza, chips. Would recommend. Barb

I agree- taybarns is great

I agree- taybarns is great value for decent food. Also, the oly place (other than my house!!) I know where it's possible to have burger, chips, salad, sweet n sour chicken, pizza AND a yorkshire pud all on the one plate! Oh, and a carvery.

Web Monkey's picture

First time at Taybarns

After reading negative comments about Taybarns in it's early days, I've stayed well clear, but after going for a birthday meal, I've got to say I was impressed.

The kids loved it, and some of the culinary concoctions they wanted on their plates worried horrify top chefs, but didn't stop them.

My only issue was there wasn't any curries, how ever this was overcome in some part with the curry sauce available in the chippy area.

I also got reacquainted with cider but that's a different story.

Steve's picture

Chav Central

Should rename Tay Barn Chav Central its awfull. Only went once under duress. I have had better school dinners. Dress code there is Track suit and Trainers by the way

Web Monkey's picture

There was an element of chaviness

But they all behaved, used the serving spoons, and all had to leave by 7:00pm because of curfews.

Ian norris's picture

Going Taybarns Friday will

Going Taybarns Friday will try and review every dish available.

I'd been toying with the idea of Takeaway review site as we seem to get new menus everyday and then find it hard where to order from.

The Crown in Wrinehill is good. About a 15 min drive from here, but well worth it. Great pub food, and cooked by someone who doesn't rely on a microwave. Quite busy though and you can't book a table, so be prepared to wait for a bit. They have proper beer there too, so waiting's not the end of the world...

Miller & Carter . Harecastle

Miller & Carter . Harecastle Farm near the Talke A500 roundabout is our favourite. Fantastic steak and burgers.. and don't forget the Onion Loaf...
Prices are mid-range but you dont mind paying a bit more for something that doesnt take like rubber in the budget pubs.

We liked Taybarn when it first happened, but it went downhill from thereon in our view such that last time we went, we to to McDonalds after for something to eat. There was hardly anything on, and what was on was not good Sad Our protest was not to go back and i dont think we will be any time soon either.
