I emailed PC Talbot & the link to the community policing unit at Tunstall police Station on Sunday afternoon. To date I have recieved no replies. Nice big poster on the front page though Matt. Good effort. If every one who reads this lets their imediate neighbours know word will get around the estate.

Just spoken to PC Talbot -

Just spoken to PC Talbot - my wife happened to notice a suspicious individual on Thursday afternoon loitering around the houses opposite the entrance to Hurricane Grove, which apparently matched the description they'd been given by others.

PC Talbot asked me to remind everyone to keep their doors locked, and to keep blinds/curtains closed, as these individuals are looking for easy takings. Don't put your presents under your Xmas trees just yet. PC Talbot also said don't worry about calling 999 if you see anything suspicious, even if it is non-local kids riding their bikes around - they've been known to pinch stuff from cars before.

Today around the estate I

Today around the estate I have seen three police cars and a PC and PCSO on foot twice. In view of these burglaries it's good to know the police are about. Well done Tunstall Police!! It's a shame the clown on the front of saturdays sentinel has nothing better to do than moan about the local police buying there dinner or milk and coffee in Asda Tunstall. Wonder if he counts how many ambulance staff/ fire fighters pop into a supermarket in there uniform? I doubt it.

Well said. I can't remember

Well said. I can't remember the amount of times I'd nip to Morrisons or Asda when I worked at The Sentinel. But maybe there's different rules for the Police that say they can't have a lunch break.

And besides, when a large part of the countries crime levels are from shop lifting what harm does it do to pop into the store and show your presence. It isn't called community policing for nothing.

I did have a little thought that made me chuckle. How envious the bobbies must be of CID as they can get away with popping to the shops as they are in plain clothes. Well I chuckled a tiny bit.PCTalbot's picture

Pc Talbot can be contacted via the Bankeyfields community site. Just sign in and send him a PM. Even if it's a word of encouragement or thanks, it will tie him closer into our community.

Also Gynn, would you mind posting an update on this page using the comments box?

It is that time of year again..............................

Securing your home

There are many things you can do to keep your home more secure which don't have to cost you a penny.

~ don't leave your spare key where anyone can find it - under a flowerpot, on ledges, on a piece of string through the letterbox or under the doormat are the first places a burglar will look

~ keep your front garden tidy - a house that looks cared for and occupied is less likely to attract thieves. Keep bushes and hedges trimmed to less than a metre as it is difficult for a burglar to crouch below this without drawing attention to him or herself

~ don't leave valuables on view - a burglar will think of it as a shop window. And remember to keep your doors and windows locked - even if you're in the back garden
don't leave garden tools lying around - not only could they get stolen, thieves can use them to break into your home. Keep them locked away - whilst it's rare for burglars to enter above ground floor, ladders should still be secured to a wall bracket

~ if you go on holiday, cancel milk and paper deliveries. If possible ask a trusted friend or neighbour to check your home while you're away

~ postcode property - not only does it help police return stolen items, it can put thieves off stealing them in the first place as they're harder to sell. Either scratch identification on or use an ultraviolet marker pen. Add your postcode and house number - if yours is a house name not a number add the first three letters of the name after the postcode

~ these pens (from DIY stores and some police stations) use an ink that shows up under ultraviolet light. Alternatively use a permanent marker if it does not matter that it shows. You can get 'post-coded property' stickers from your local crime reduction unit and some police stations

~ take pictures of valuable items like jewellery, ceramics or silverware and write down the serial numbers of electrical goods. Put a ruler next to the object as this gives a better idea of the size of the object stolen which helps police identify them if they are recovered. Make sure you keep the pictures safe, ideally leave them with a friend

~ be a good neighbour. Keep your eyes and ears open in your local community. Burglars find it more difficult to operate when people watch out for each other.
why not join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme or even start one up in your local community. If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police. If you see anyone breaking into a property call 999 immediately.

REMEMBER THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A NOSEY NEIGHBOUR ONLY A CARING ONE.

ref: Burglaries

I was approached by one of neighbours yesterday in reference to the grit bins, what grit bins..(that`s another story) and he said a friend fitted a alarm on the house that was burgled and he said that one of the houses in hurricane grove was right on the back...which if i am not mistaken has a nice muggers alley running behind it, so easy pickings over the back fence, well maybe the people who own them houses need to bard wire the tops of the fences......and take extra security measures..
If you remember a few weeks back i stopped 2 chappychav-smackhead wannabies about to rob my garage....i think openspace has attracted more wannabies..! sign of the times..
