I would hate the loss of a local pub we have lost one due to fire we did have that many - pubs in such a small area that you could get drunk having 1pt at each one and crawl home does anybody remember those days of the good old pub crawl i think goldenhill gave the name to this night out actifity --- tell me if you remember the names of all the pubs on the hill --?? how many were their.

The Red Lion used to be a

The Red Lion used to be a great pub. It has not been at its best since Gwyn left about six years ago. Never managed to do all the Pubs on Goldenhill in one night but I am told that before my time there were even more. My father used to tell me that Ladywell rd in Tunstall held the record for the most pubs in one street. There also used to be a brewery at the end of it near the jct with High St

number of pub's in goldenhill

HI,
I was born in Goldenhill,
If you started at Sandyford there was,
The gardeners arms, The dog and Partridge, jolly colliers, the globe, George Brads The duke of wellington
Dick jones The Swan, Tux Bentoms The jokey, Sammy Whitakers the wheatsheaf, The nelson, The Red Lion, and last but not least, The travelers rest,
There was also The working mans club,
I've had a pint in all of them , But not in the same night,

Good luck And enjoy your pint,
Fred Welsh, Formaly of Wilson Way.

I'm a longton lad originally

I'm a longton lad originally - the closest we came to a pub crawl was la trex in meir then back down to longton to the pub next to Steeles arcade (can't recall the name) then Shelleys!

On New Years eve we used to be a bit more adventurous Wink Start at the top of anchor road (one pint in each) working our way down to longton (about 6 pubs) then into Longton Town Hall for pie/peas and more beer Big Grin

I don't have a local anymore. Closest thing is the Red House in longton where the footie coaches leave from and my old doll still drinks. After that its Hem Heath cricket club before the home games Surprise I think there is a pattern developing Kiss

the red lion

dear alan colclough and others,
unfortunatley most pubs now are finding it very hard to make ends meet, thus closure is inevitable, since placing this blog alan you will hav noticed the red lion has closed, However before you get too upset i can tell you it is reopening very soon, under my managers, please feel free to call in, tell the lady behind the bar your name and i will get you a pint in, the red lions story is many people loose faith in a pub due to constant closures or changing of owners, i dont know the ending to the story of the red lion, i only know for as long as it has my name above the door, i will try my hardest to keep adding chapters, thank you for starting this blog, myself and my team look forward to seeing you all shortly. Maybe together, goldenhill can keep at least one of its long standing public houses.
regards
the red lion and all that work in her

Thanks for the reply i will call in and have a chat may be we can come up with an idea of trying to fill the place again ? but today people need some thing different not the old pub image - the customers you need are a different breed and will only respond to something different - try this one for something different.
The first pub to be a PLACE WHERE YOU CAN GO AND HAVE A MEAL any meal you want and pay the same as you would at any take away - also NO COOKING - HOWS THAT WORK YOU ASK YOUR SELF - well if you have a food licence ?- and go to a local take away and ask them will they supply take aways to your pub you could get a discount why because you picked them to be the take away of your choice and they get good publicity and customers - you could have 4/5 different types of take aways all ready to deliver a order when you want it this takes care of customers needs and also ITS different -
What you do is open the back room for eating set out tables and supply knives and forks thats easy - then have the menues available - at no cost to you - put up your chosen take away display signs again at no cost to you - display what the customers need to do to place a take away order - order on the phone what they want and wait for the delivery boy again easy - orders must be paid for before any order is rang out - stops any body trying it on ie no refunds give them a receipt and disply no refunds when order is placed - ??? would i go to a pub that i can have any meal and pay a cheap price answer is yes and i think a lot of customers would do the same its DIFFERENT yet so simple - and you know i can see it working - the publicity alone radio stoke etc etc would bring them in from all over stoke on trent why its new you have a upstairs room that i use to go to different functions dont do anything with it you will need it for the over flow of customers who want to eat and DRINK .
well i have put a thought in your mind -- change is when you do something NEW and this is so new it will work - BY THEY WAY i will take you up on my free pint ,
Look forward to your thoughts on this and comments i have other ideas but this one costs a phone call and some guts to try it.
IM SURE YOU WILL NEED TO CHECK OUT THE RULES AND REGS BUT WOULD BE SUPPRISED IF IT BREAKS ANY LAWS BUT YOU ARE THE EXPERT AND I MAY HAVE IT WRONG IF I HAVENT - YOU WILL FILL THE PLACE .

ALAN COLCLOUGH

PS TRIED TO CORRECT SPELLING ERRORS WOULD NOT DO ?? SO FOR INFO
FORKS - DIFFERENT - EXPERT ETC ETC - CORRECTED BUT DID NOT RESPOND TO . NEVERMIND HAVE A LAUGH

Brennens

Good idea Alan.

When Chris Brennen took over the pub from his Dad (about 96/97 - that makes me feel old) he'd always let us have takeaways.

Cheifly because he wanted one, but even still. Theres nothing better than sitting down in a pub eating curry and having a proper drink, with out the cost of the booze being to steep.

I can't belive the rate at which our locals are closing. If one was situated nearer to the bankeyfields estate it would be ideal.

You couldn't get the lion towed down to reg mitch could you landlord?

The new owner of the Red Lion has said we can hold NHW meetings

The owner of the Red Lion has said we can hold NHW meetings at the Red Lion pub.

He's more than happy for us to be there, as he wants the pub to be involved in the local community as pubs used to be.

NHW Next meeting

WM the next meeting time, venue is already decided. Future venues are up for debate as per Jo,s notes. But nice of Simon to offer. Good buisness acumen I would say.

sorry steve if you misunderstud my comment - only the nhw are doing a great job and im sure they will continue to deside where and when they have the next meeting .
and keep it local ie in the community that they live in - only if the the local community do have pubs or a buisness that need support im sure they will do the correct thing and help them .
all the best Alan c

As I mentioned earlier, I'm

As I mentioned earlier, I'm a longton lad so I have no idea where the red lion even is!

I thought we were all made VERY welcome at the rifleman even if we couldn't hear ourselves think when the DJ got going Smile I'd be happy to keep ging back there for the NHW meetings.

As for how a pub stays in business, its anybody's guess. Each one is different and each has its own recipe for success or failure.

I know that the pub we use in longton for a few drinks before stoke away games makes a killing as the departure point for coaches. Full english breakfasts or cheese oatcakes are laid on at decent prices along with a few pints @ 7:00am before getting on the coach for Chelsea Hypnotized ( It'll be crystal palace next season no doubt Worried )

They make as much in that 1/2 hour or so than they do most weeknights.

Keep going past the bike shop, oatcake shop, co-op, golden delicious (Hmm kebab) , and the turning that will take you down for Golden Hill Primary - just there on the corner.

Red Lion, Goldenhill

Found this site by accident whilst looking for something else.
Mention of the Red Lion took me down 'memory lane'.
I was born in Sandyford in 1943 and went to school in Goldenhill.
The Queen's Coronation in 1953 was a major event and the Red Lion hosted
a party for all the local children.
I have been all over the country since and am now retired and living in rural
Cheshire, but Goldenhill and the Red Lion still hold fond memories for me.

White Horse in Tunstall

Has anyone ever tried the White Horse in tunstall (across from Aldi)??? I have been going there for over 4 years now on the odd girly nights out, . Fri nights used to be packed out unfortunately it seems to be getting quieter which is a great shame as it is a cracking place. They do a karaoke night on Fri.
