Christmas Love it or Loath It ?

I am the first to admit when it comes to Christmas I am a Baa Humbug. Popeye has been across today trying to cajole me into putting the obligitory Christmas lights. These are my reasons for not being a great fan of this Christian Celebration.
Most people who bang on about it never go to Church and then say "its for the kids". People who never go out all year go to the pub have a few drinks and want to fight the world. So I go for a meal where there is a plethora of office parties going on all having food fights. To me Christmas has turned into a big commercial spin off and lost its soul. Alas also this time when we are supposed to show godwill to all men seems to be the time of most family fuedesaccording to the same statistics that bounce across the news screens.
For me the only bit of Christmas I do like is where I cook the dinner Popeye and his clan call around to say hello before our small family sits down to dinner and then have a nice relaxing afternoon.
So come on all what are your Likes or dislikes about Christmas.

For me, Christmas has never

For me, Christmas has never been anything special, even as a child. Being bought up on a farm, where the work for my dad never ended, I even remember helping to offload a lorry full of bales of hay one Christmas afternoon- what was all that about?!

My sister and I used to be really excited that father Christmas had been, leaving us lots of lovely presents under the tree. However, although we were up really early, we were only ever allowed to open one pressie before about 930, when dad came in from the farm.

Then, it was a bit of mad rush to get the presents open, lunch made and eaten, before dad had to go back to the farm again, until about 7pm.

In fact, Christmas day was worse than most days, as the employed help for the farm was off, and dad was on his own (albeit with my help once I was about 14).

So, sorry, for me it's always been a bit of a let down.

These days, I do enjoy going to midnight mass, with Drew and friends from Manchester (the last 2 years running), and would dearly love to cook Christmas lunch for both our families- maybe one year soon we will.

This year's efforts will be as normal- midnight mass, then Christmas meal with the folks, and my sister. Then back home for an early night.

The good news (and there is some) is that I am not working, or even on call, for 2 whole days. For those of you who are clients, please be advised that from 6pm Xmas eve to 9am Dec 27th, my phones will divert you to Nantwich Veterinary Hospital. However, my number has been splashed around on here quite a bit, so if you have a problem, and I'm sober (no promises), feel free to call.

please also see my 'Christmas Cracker not Christmas Crisis' entry for some basic do's and dont's for your pets this christmas.

Christmas Lights

Is it me or are there less houses adorned with festive lights on the estate this year ?. Could it be people are waiting for the weather to warm up or are they watching the energy bills ?. I had better get mine up this weekend before Popeye starts moaning again.
