Apology from Kevin and Sharon Slater RE: Teenage Party ending with fights on neighbours lawns June 2010, Bankeyfields, Tunstall

Click thumbnails for larger image

On the 25th June a teenager (17) took advantage of her parents being away, and for the second year running (see related story below) held a party at her house, on John Rhodes Way, Tunstall.

After a week of loud music, the volume was cranked even further. The stipulated  5 friends soon became over 20, and the late afternoon/early evening drinking soon turned sour.

Immediate neighbours were threatened and verbally abused in their own back garden, and urinated at through slatted fencing and threatened to be urinated on.

At approximately  21:00 a fight broke out in the house,  spilling out into the street and neighbours garden with a group of about 20 people fighting amongst cars, and lawns, whilst the neighbour children looked on.

The police were called, and arrived promptly, the fight broke up and the teenagers slowly moved on, hanging around houses of some elderly occupants.

Whilst outside, residents in the street who came to make sure Kevin and Sharon's dog, house and daughter were safe at the time of the fight were abused and threatened.

The following letter was asked to be read out at last weeks Bankeyfields Residents Association meeting as the persons involved couldn't attend due to work obligations.

Dear all,

Due to work commitments we are unable to attend tonight's meeting.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience or upset caused by the deplorable behaviour of our daughter and her so called friends.

We have taken action to prevent this from being repeated in the future.

  1.  Within 2h hours of finding out about the trouble we arranged for her to stay at her Gran's for the remainder of our break (thus removing any chance of a repeat).
  2. Upon our return all stereos were taken to the tip to prevent any chance of loud music in future. (If anybody does hear any even during the day please let us know so that more action can be taken).3. When we go away in future we will send Sam to her Gran's and take her key with us to ensure that the street will remain quite (at least from our house) while we are away.
  3. Again we fully agree that nobody should have to suffer in the way that some of you have done and wish that we could turn time back. We hope that you can accept our comments and in time accept us back in the community.

Yours Sincerely
<Signed>
Kevin and Sharon Slater

After the letter was read out at the residents association, it was commented that the letter was a step in the right direction, and a brave move by having it publicly read out.

Individuals also expressed that at this point in time, two weeks on a more personal apology was required.

If any parent is in need of a suitable punishment for their kids, can I recommend sending them around the park with a carrier bag, or take some weeding equipment down to the mini roundabout.

I am amazed that a PERSONAL apology has not been made to, my wife, Yvonne, who suffered the brunt of the verbal abuse and threatening behaviour. It is one thing to send a brief note to the RA meeting but if this had been my daughter, i would have personally dragged her round next door and forced her to give an apology. Also, as the parent, I would have made it my business to sincerely express my sorrow for what had happened. A good neighbourly and social friendship has been ruined due to people's unwillingness and/or ability to say SORRY!

Crikey I remember that

Crikey I remember that racket. I live at the bottom for GE close and could still hear it. I feel sorry for everybody closer than me, especially the next door neighbours. I had some disturbances last year (elsewhere) and learnt to call the police sooner rather than later…
