Tunstall: What five things would you do to improve the area?

Click thumbnails for larger image

Five things to improve Tunstall! Imagine you were in power, what 5 things would you change or strengthen

Very hypothetical this one, but imagine if you were in power and could push through five things that would make Tunstall better. Better for people, better for business, better all round. You might want to list 5 things that are already good, and are being done well.

You might want to list 5 things that are good schemes in place all ready, but aren't being done well.

By the way, if you can't think of five, or your list is as long as your arm, we'd still like to hear your thoughts.

Don't worry if someone else has already listed one of your options, or even all of your options, it's your list.

What a great idea Webb

What a great idea Webb Monkey.
1/ Tunstall, Sandyford, and Goldenhill needs a voice as we have not got one, one that shouts "wheres our shair of the cake"

2/ the road through the town redone so it does not resemble a roller coaster ride.

3/ the Library used, Top floor, and second floor used for "our" students with skills in science, art and engineering.

4/ more power to the Residents Associations, as these are on the ground and have a far superior idea of what would make their community better, than a councillor sitting on their backsides in the chamber.
Remember last winter and the grit crisis, 106 monies, returned to their rightfull owners.

5/ an end to Take aways, fast food and alchohol licences being dished out willy nilly, and reduction in rates to encourage new varied buisness into the empty buildings.

I would encourage open air shows in the town to entertain the shoppers.
I have seen how this brings in people in the summer and puts them in a happy mood, as we all need cheering up sometimes.
Sorry I got carried away.
Once you start its hard to stop.
Can't wait to see what other people have to say.
PEOPLE POWER WINS EVERYTIME.

Cheers for your answers

Cheers for your answers Terry, are you able to promote this page to people in your area, it would be good to get as many people to comment as possible.

If you have more than five, carry on, and get carried away, it's an interesting path you going down, I'd like to hear more.

I've got the answer for 1.
1. We do have a voice now, it just needs using more, and help promoting it to those with the Internet - that this site. Lets make the most out of it.

3. Affordable rents for new businesses, I like the idea of that.

4. Defo - don't even get me going on 106 and grit, in fact we now need to start badgering the council to make sure our roads are on their list of grit bins to supply or to do.

To be honest when I posted

To be honest when I posted the question, I didn't have any answers and I've got to admit these below are still a first attempt. But we need more ideas on this page, so I thought I'd give it ago.

It's good to see Terry is well ahead of me, and has already got his answers ready, and no doubt will be back to comment on others.

1. A long term plan to bring jobs into the area, a public committee whose job it is to plan and report back. They'll need to look at: land available for development, training schemes for the local population waiting to work, attracting the town.

2. Pride: plain and simple, I'd like to see more and more people to start having pride in their town. The council aren't going to do it for is, it's something we have to see to our selves. Without pride there is no way this town or it's population can start to attract industry and growth.
Why should a few, waste their energy cleaning up the streets, to then have them trashed by all walks of life.

3. More policing walking, and chatting on the streets day and night, cut down on the low lifes, and give decent people their streets back.

4. Internet. More information online. I can't find a much info about Tunstall on the councils website, I'd like for more people to take ownership of this site and promote local services, business, and community.

5. Resident Groups working closer together. We are all in the same boat, so lets be of the same voice. I'm not talking politics, I'm talking sticking up for each other, being stronger by forging stronger links with each other, find out what works and what doesn't.

Webb Monkey, realy like your

Webb Monkey, realy like your proposals, no 1 brilliant this one should get priority with officials.
We have the land to use as training grounds for horticulture and growing food to pay its way.
No 2 will be a lot harder as I believe the council have been using Tunstall and its surrounding areas as a dumping ground for problem families, and are not prepared to punish these problems.
No 3 on the Hoskins estate we have found that a visit unanounced does wonders albeit I think the misscreants are moving out to other estates.
No 4 I like this idea I am allways banging on at our meetings to register on this site and search for information from other areas, advertising local buisness's is a realy good idea.
No 5 My favourite, the council hold R/As by just giving them £100 per year and two sets of leaflets printed.
We would be stronger together I agree totaly with you.
We could realy get things moving by supporting each others projects.
Not political but PEOPLE POWER it would be awsome.

no more takeaway shops that

no more takeaway shops that open late at night and do nothing for the town in the daytime. - theres far to many in tunstall and burslem - and surrounding areas.
and barber/hairdressers on waterloo road .

the shops in Tunstall/Burslem more independant shops that sell items that residents need, and that the floors above the shops are used, convert to flats

the brownfields/waste land on brownhill road - sort that out .
more industry in the area for jobs - not just shops

pride in your areas history, its now and its furture,

one thing i do think is good is Tunstall market- theres a good selection of stalls ,

terry turbo's picture

Webb Monkey The one thing

Webb Monkey The one thing that comes to mind about R/As not being political is that we could have a say in who to select for our councillor.
This will make the candidate realise that the people elected them to serve them not Their party or the officers of the council, and we will have a greater hold over them.
At the moment we have no say because "our" councillors go their own way.
There will be a blog to explain what I mean next tuesday.

For Tunstall Town for the

For Tunstall Town for the planners to either allow ASDA 2nd Entrance or get on with the Gateway plans for that corner of Town.

Traffic Wardens or APN cameras to keep High Street clear

Change Lanes at Boulvard back to left turn only

Make developer clean up those new appartments on Boulevard.

Terry with Single member wards next year I'd hope more candidates come from RA or other community/sporting groups in the area.

Nice one Ian like your

Nice one Ian like your choices.
I believe the R/As can hold a lot of power if they join forces, maybe then we won't get shafted so much by the council.

1, Develop the land off James

1, Develop the land off James Brindley Way for kids give them 5 aside football courts, tennis courts, skate board ramps, cycle track and benches and tables to sit and congregate around. This would put a lot of the kids in one place making it easier to police. They would have easy access to McDonalds and KFC. Perhaps this would take the older kids away from our parks and allow the children that they where meant for play in them.
2, Give the R/A more power within the area’s they cover to give out fines for littering and dog fouling.
3, More community police patrols on foot and not in cars.

Web Monkey's picture

1, I like the sound of that.

1, I like the sound of that. No doubt it will all be done in Tunstall park, so it will only benefit kids from one part of the town.

2, We'll have to keep an eye out for Cameron's Big Society to see if this sort of thing will happen.

These are my five. 1)

These are my five.

1) Quarterly meetings between council officials resposnsible for our area , councilors and members of the RA,s
2) The above council officials and councilors to be held accountable for their descisions.
3) Legal advisors on hand at the meeings to assist RA,s with regard to our rights.
4) All take aways to provide litter picking teams/patrols for the duration of their opening hours
5) Council patrols issuing on the spot fines for littering , dog fouling and also fines for the take aways if their packaging is found on the streets.

Make the council accountable after all its what our new coalition goverment are pontificating about.

Web Monkey's picture

2) Openness, I'd love to see

2) Openness, I'd love to see that one.
3) now your talking
4) off license too.
5) well you're on that theme how about "collectively punish all alcohol retailers in the area for any broken or discarded bottles/cans?"

Ian norris's picture

1) Quarterly meetings between council officials resposnsible for our area , councilors and members of the RA,s
This is something the new Community Voice Group at the Council are advocating, seeting up Neighbourhood Committees whose input would then feed back to Committees at Civic Centre
2) The above council officials and councilors to be held accountable for their descisions
again something having 1 member wards will make happen.
I'm kind of excited about 1 member wards, but its going to need 40+ local people willing to step forward

Webb Monkey, you've realy started something here.
What brilliiant Ideas are comming out.
Steves thrown some crackers into the mix, as well as Ian.
We should get together with other interested party's (no councillors), it would make one hell of a gathering.
Just think of what we could do.

I have read some of the

I have read some of the latest posts with great interest, one post however disturbs me, and that is all RAs get together as one voice, having been to many NHW conferences, which are run on general themes, tend to be hijacked by a small minority, to bring up personal matters, I would envisage that a meeting up of all RAs to be worse, and that nothing would get achieved.

I am all for the RAs sharing best practice, but some RAs with an outspoken commitee may hijack the floor from those smaller RAs who may have a bigger issue that needs dealing with

Web Monkey's picture

Mark, you raise a valid

Mark, you raise a valid concern. When I attended a meeting about putting on events for the centennial celebrations virtually all of the meeting was spent arguing between a few people who should be elected to a board, which would doll out cash to groups with ideas. The actual ideas chit chat that we'd gone for never materialised. The meeting left a sour taste in my mouth, it was my first ever inter Residents Association meeting, and to be fair it wasn't a good one.

But just because some people can shout doesn't mean a format can be put in place which gives every group a chance to have their say.

How about this, every RA group attending writes their key points on a white board/flip chart, sticky notes. Or a spokes person for every group stands up, introduces them selves and speaks quickly about their key aims.

Each item is picked at random and the topic goes from their. It's given a set amount of time, and then once the key points are raised, it's time to move on.

We pick a strong chair who'll take no BS, and therefore get no BS.

The first meeting could well be the last if it doesn't go right, so it's in every ones best interest to make it work.

Blog to Comment: Mark, I've moved your reply/blog into this discussion as it's were it belongs, rather than fragment the debate, lets keep it here. It is after all promoting ideas of ways to better Tunstall.

A few off the wall

A few off the wall suggestions.

1. Alter the parking times at Asda, argos, etc, by increasing from 2 hours to 4 would encourage visitors into the High street shops and market.
2. Utilise the space above the market, its probably listed, so here to stay.
3. Continental market.
4. Weatherspoons, or similar pub chain, club/ disco.
5. Carboot/table top sales in square.

With the likes of Asda, matalan, argos, etc bringing visitors in, plus the excellent indoor market, would not take too much to make Tunstall a vibrant town again.

6.Invite members of the local chamber of commerce to contribute to this site, on how they are trying to promote this town.

terry turbo's picture

Webb Monkey, know what you

Webb Monkey, know what you mean I was at that embarrassing meeting, but a propley organised gathering could work in all our favours with each one supporting the other.
Your suggestions sound perfect.
Its got to be worth a chance, starting with two or three of us and working up from there.
Sharky, table top sale great, with local entertainers it would work a treat.
What about a Residents Association table with all the information on all the R/As.

Web Monkey's picture

Have a read of this page on

Have a read of this page on Visit Burlsem, they hold a monthly Burslem & Middleport Local Forum, and by the looks of the groups listed they have a good mixed bag..

Middleport Residents Association, Midland Heart, John Baskeyfield, RENEW, British Waterways and CAB (more? I lost track) have all been involved in some excellent work over the last few weeks to create community gardens and develop a shared allotment for older people.

I know renew are dead on their feet, but it's the sort of bodies you would want, I also like the idea that cab is there. I also think someone form the business sector should come along to ours.

Has everyone run out of

Has everyone run out of ideas? What about youth groups, tackling drug crime, there must be more.

What a bout ideas for directing trade back into the town centre?

dereth's picture
