The biggest employer of the Tunstall and Sandyford area, Churchill China yesterday reported a 50% rise in profits from January to July with a reported figure of £600,000 pre-tax profit off the back of £20.2 million sales.

Compared to last year Churchill made £400,000 for the same time period, but went on to make £1.2 million in the second period of 2009.

This years profits rose due to the hospitality sector outperform expectations as more people dined out in 2010 than 2009.

Mr Roper, Chief Executive also praised workers and the area by saying "People sometimes mock Stoke-on-Trent, but they forget just what a good workforce most of us have."

Still with unsteady times ahead in the domestic markets, Churchill China is pinning it's future growth on the export market, and has hinted at possibly scaling down production after Christmas due to VAT rises and uncertain markets.
