Residents Association
Residents Associations help to bring a community together, and enable them to gain further access to your local councillors and resources (well hopefully). At the last meeting vote was held

Bankeyfields Open Space

Anti Social Behaviour - towards the back end of March continuing through April and May anti social behaviour on the park had begun to get out of control. Glass was being smashed in the toddler section of the park was rising. Bottles, cans and assorted litter wa rising in and around the park, and late night activity was getting worse.

A number of residents choose to not accept this, and called the councils anti social helpline, and Police non emergency number, on several occasions. The residents, including Steve Barrow, Matt Burke, Bryn Jones, Gordon Owen would phone the numbers in force.

During this time Tunstall Police Inspector Mark Harden wrote to Matt Burke to say that the Bankeyfields Park had been added to the list of trouble spots, and receives regular visits  from the ASBO undercover car and ASBO team of officers.

Although the problem hasn’t fully gone away, the situation did get better, but it’s one of those problems that won’t go away, and if you want to keep the park half way decent, we have to be vigilant.

If you hear or see anti social behavior, or late and noisy use of the park, please don’t leave it unreported. Tell the operator it is a know trouble spot.

Anti Social Behaviour Updates from week commencing 2nd Aug 2010
On the 2nd August 2010, a number of incidents occurred on the open space involving some sort of threat or abuse to children of the estate.

Midday saw children walking their dog around the park abused by teenagers and frightened by their unleashed staffy bull in the park. The parents went to investigate and they to were met with abuse.  http://goo.gl/ljwd

The park and open space have been littered with glass, and attempt by parents to sweep and pick up all of the glass in the toddler section of the park. http://goo.gl/VfyY

Lastly on the eventing of 2nd August, a child on the open space had his bike stolen, by a group of three teenagers, aged approx 13/14. Local Police Community Officer PC GLyn Talbot soon arrived at the scene, but the bike has yet to be recovered.

Stenciling
Thanks go to Bryn Jones for again keeping an eye on the park, and raising issues. Bryn has been asking for more signs on the park to try and get people to tidy their dog poo up after their animal has done it’s business. New stencilling will be appearing on the open space, and we are starting to form connections with the local council environment officer.

Maintenance Contract/Missing Money - please read *
Many of you will have noticed the lack of maintenance on the open space. When the park was built in quarter 1 of 2008, £110,000 had been put aside for 10 years worth of maintenance of the park, including 6 cuts a year. Last year saw one, and this year, the first has only been completed.

We then found out on the night of the meeting from Cllr Ryan that there was no money for cutting of the open space. In fact when pressed there is no money left in the budget.

Thanks to Mark Gray and Tony Cooper, who have passed on notes, emails and documents from the old Neighbourhood Watch. The documents make for some interesting reading.

After much investigating, we have decided to try and get some straight answers from the council about what has happened to the 106 ring fenced maintenance contract money.

Depending on the answers we get back, we might need to take our case forward to the district ombudsman for further investigation, as £110k of your money added to the price of your houses just doesn’t vanish over the space of two years.

Harry Hancocks
As of the 22nd of June, the owner of Harry Hancocks started a major clean up operation, and has had ballards installed to stop cars driving to the back of the building fly tipping or providing easy access to the open space.

Adoption - Please read especially if you want to sell your house*
Reading through the notes from Tony Cooper’s files, they’d chased and chase endlessly to try and get the estate adopted. Something that really the parties involved should have been doing in the first place, not leaving it to residents.

In 2006 it seemed like the estate was 2 weeks away from being adopted before the Seven Trent complained about a problem with the sun off, located over Reginald Mitchell Way, below Focus.

We are now hearing rumours that solicitors are advising their clients not to move onto the estate because the land has yet to be adopted by the council.

We are asking all residents of the Bankeyfields estate to write to the Council, Barretts, Taylor Wimpy and Seven Trent about hurrying up with the adoption of the estate. House prices will suffer, and house unsold is not good for anyone. It creates a bad reputation for the estate.

We will ensure that when this adoption finally takes place that the relevant parties write to local solicitors to explain the change in the status quo.

Environmental Opportunities
Mike Stubbs (Bankeyfields treasurer ) spoke of certain opportunities that the estate could be part of which would allow homes on the estate to draw a certain amount of energy from natural sources, reducing fuel costs.

A number of options are available, which Mike will be investigating over the next few months.

Speeding on the Estate
Ian Wilkinson, a new member of the Residents Association wants to encourage residents to be part of a Speed Watch scheme, after raising concerns over the cars again speeding over the  John Rhodes Way/Reginald Mitchell Way Roundabout. Coupled with concerns of residents speeding on the estate, Ian is looking for residents to help with plans to save lives.
