Loud Bang followed by sirens in Tunstall

I've just noticed a post from @FunkydoryStokie a member of the Tunstall Twittersphere asking if

Anyone hear the big bang in Tunstall about 14:30? heard sirens after to, any ideas?

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Aye up,

I visited my mum in Machin Street, Tunstall, and she was telling me about hearing an "Almighty bang" at about 1:30 pm today. Shortly after there was a fire engine in the area and a couple of police cars drove up the street with their sirens going.

What it was, or exactly where it was locatetd I don't know, but i'm just writing to confirm that something did happen. Unfortunately I was in Burslem at that time so I didn't hear anything myself.

Can't you pump your local police contacts for any info?

I meant to get back to you when I read your post but with one thing and another I forgot. I too heard the bang, looked out of the window (cus I live close to the High St) could not see anything so didn't give it another thought until about an hour later when my son came home early (about 2-30) from Brownhills School He had forgotten to tell us that it was the official open day for 'The Co-Operative Academy for Brownhills'' ( the new name for his school). Amongst other things they had had fireworks, and as he put it to me "YOU MUST HAVE HEARD THEM MUM, THEY WERE SOOO LOUD". It then occurred to me that must have been the bang that I heard, I can only surmise that if it was what your mum heard the sirens were probably just coincidental. :L

Thanks for that Nick.Atelle, it just seemed so weird when there was nothing about it on the local news or in the Sentinel, we were really puzzled about what it could be,and why nothing was reported.
