Volunteers needed to Paint the Reginald Mitchell Way Aeroplanes (Spitfire and Super Marine)

A couple of months ago, both Dereth and Bryn had mentioned on different occasions that the plane silhouettes on the grass banks of Reginald Mitchell Way need painting, why don't locals do the job. Again, new user Rob Ledgar of The Old Post Office Gallery in Burslemsuggested it after having a crack at where in Tunstall 40

I'm not sure of the exact date but back in the mid to late 90's Mitchell's planes were put in place and looked quite nice. Since then though they have paled from their former glory, and have started to look shabby.

With this being the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, I think it's fitting that the people of Tunstall, and the local Artistic community make these monuments to Reginald Mitchell, and the fighter pilots that flew them, great once more.

Councillor Megan Ryan is checking of the legalities of Stoke-on-Trent residents doing the work.

Rob is talking to local artists who will be well placed to co-ordinate the event.

My task is to find volunteers to help out.

And I need someone who is good at getting freebies from some local companies. We are going to need paint, a generator, jet wash, and brushes.

Come on this should be a fun and enterprising project.

Please be part of it.

By the way, this is all work

By the way, this is all work in progress, we still need the councils permission, which hopefully we'll get.

They did want to paint them last year but couldn't afford.

.Count me in as well.

.Count me in as well. Regarding the jet wash and generator what about the chap that comes on the estate washing out the wheelie bins. Or another suggestion is let’s see if the new fire station could help with the use of a fire engine this would bode well for community spirit. Could be a good bit of publicity for the estate and new fire station. Lets try and get Focus on board as well see if they could donate paint and brushes because I am sure as residents we have all spent a bit of money in the store.

i would like to take part in

i would like to take part in this,
what about the paints that are placed in the city dump- on Federation Road- they have a large metal containner full of unwanted paints , i think they are donated to locate activities too.

plus B&Q have a community grant section- through the residents group you should be able to bid for some money.

volenteers you could contact the princes trust group at stoke-on-trent college, the people taking part in this brilliant activity are always looking for different things for the kids to take part in.

Brilliant, thanks everyone,

Brilliant, thanks everyone, can you help to spread the word as word as well. If any one wants to send a email to the council (either Cllr Megan Ryan megan.ryan@stoke.gov.uk or enquires@stoke.gov.uk) may help sway their decision.

I'm looking forward to this project being approved and completed. The planes will look really mint, and a fitting honour for those who fought and those who died protecting Britain, in a battle that went a long long way to protect these shores from looming invasion.

It is great to see that so

It is great to see that so many people are keen to help but it would be a specialised job painting them. If not done properly within a very short period of time they would start to look very shabby indeed. The original work would have been done by putting coloured dye into the concrete. I think I am correct in saying that it would take a profesional contractor to carry this out.

Floor paint may well be a possibility for M and rounels etc. It is suitable for use on concrete and am sure its ok for external use.

I tried concrete paint on our greenhouse floor. Looked great until the water went under it, then it all peeled off, I am sure that this was due to it not being OK for use in high water environments.

Let’s find out what paint

Let’s find out what paint graffiti artists use because if you take a look around the city there has been stuff on walls for years that have not been affected by the weather.

Good news everyone, I spoke

Good news everyone, I spoke to Cllr Megan Ryan whose been chasing this from the council's point of view and has come back to me.

In principle we can do it.

There are some stipulations.

1) We need to use specialist paint (as the point has already been raised last week by Steve), but they have to source the paint.
2) the planes must be in their tradition colours.

A big "Thank You" to everyone who has approached so far with support. We even have a troop of sea cadets who are going to use the project as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award (will make the place look less ghastly)
