Increased charges at Dimensions + £1 parking fees

By

Of all the ways the council can make money, it's decided that the best way to do it is to further tax on the healthy and further burden the people who are facing the most financial stress, from increase prices, wage freezes, cuts and redundancies.

New car park charges are being introduced to Dimensions, so every visit will cost you a £1. The main reason for doing this is because of the illegal parking. Illegal parking? Apparently there is a high amount of illegal parking? Is there?

Rewind 2 years and Dimensions was ear marked for closure, now it looks like the council are dead set to run it down again.

Cabinet approves sport and leisure charges
Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s cabinet has approved increases to admission fees at its sport and leisure facilities, as well as parking charges at two major leisure centres.

The increases for hiring facilities, including senior football pitches, should come into effect from January 2011, while the parking charges should take effect from the same time. An exact introduction date will be published later.

The increase in charges for hiring venues comes after a review of the department’s costs and the need to increase revenue in the future.

Councillor Hazel Lyth, cabinet member for adult social care, leisure and culture, said: “Finances are tight at the moment and we have to realise that increasing fees and charges is necessary in order to be able to provide our services to a good standard.

“Concessions on the cost of activities will be available those with an Energise Plus card and the Energise Plus scheme will continue. We run an excellent service and our fees and charges are comparable with those in neighbouring authorities. We would not be increasing them if we didn’t believe it to be absolutely necessary.”

“Paid up members of Shapes and Dimensions health and fitness clubs will be exempt from the parking charge and there will be provision for blue badge holders. The membership scheme offers good value for money as it means people can use those gyms and facilities on a regular basis at a nominally cheaper cost, and incorporate their parking into that fee too.”

Dimensions receives around 400,000 visits per year while Fenton Manor gets around 700,000. The city council does not currently charge people for parking at these facilities, but some other local authorities do charge for parking at some leisure centres. The charges will be £1 for three hours and £4 for three hours and over.

Proposed Football Pitch Charges 2011/12 Season

The revised charging schedule which has been developed for the city’s football facilities is based on a simple and transparent formula as follows:

Pitch quality + changing room quality = price to be charged

There is considerable variation in the quality of both pitches and where available changing accommodation across the city’s football facilities. Whilst over the next two years funding has been made available to help address this to some extent it will not be possible to bring all facilities up to the standards of the city’s Premier site at Bradeley Football Development Centre. Due to the allocated funds it is anticipated that many of the pitches/facilities can be significantly upgraded and as a result it is desirable to create a strong link between the quality of facilities and the charges levied as this will allow for facilities to be re graded as they are enhanced and thus future years income to grow.

The grading of pitches and changing facilities has been taken from work undertaken to develop the City’s Playing Pitch Strategy as part of the 2009-16 Sport and Physical Activity Strategy as follows:

The pricing bands above are based on the following principals:

Ensuring that a reasonable differential exists or is introduced between each grade of pitch and changing accommodation.

Ensuring that as far as possible the revised pricing structure starts at a point equivalent to existing prices.

The removal of differential pricing between Saturday and Sunday bookings.

The proposed new pricing structure for pitches has been consulted on with the local football leagues and whilst some concerns were expressed with regards to the overall price levels the principal of changing based on the quality of facilities offered was welcomed.

Dimensions / Tunstall

Dimensions / Tunstall Pool

Although you still have to pay parking to use Tunstall Pool it is only £0.80p / hr compared to the £1 that Dimensions want to charge - could get the number of users up at Tunstall pool.

Yes ok that's an addition to the charges but we pay that every week for our son's swimming lessons and when the weather permits in the summer we walk down.

One problem with DW Fitness was the times that you could take children swimming / times of swimming lessons if your working all day.

while going to the gym at

while going to the gym at dimenions about 2 months ago now, we saw people counting cars going in and out of the carpark, and thought then that they were doing this to charge people for parking.
people will just park on the roads near by.

The study carried out on

The study carried out on Dimensions in the summer indicated that Vale fans every other Saturday were flooding the car park.

Ok, it's a problem for the leisure centre. It's been a problem for a long time to be honest so why hasn't a solution been taken into account before now. Also why doesn't the solution only come into effect on a Saturday afternoon?

I asked today if people bringing their children for swimming lessons would be exempt from the parking charge and as of today the staff weren't able to give me an answer because they'd not been given an answer.

As my kids go to the swimming lessons at dimensions you get to know a number of the other parents and it's fair to say that a high number do come from out of the city to bring their kids to the swimming lessons.

Kids from Newcastle Under Lyme Borough, Biddulph, Congleton, Holmes Chapel, Nantwhich - all money that's coming into the city. But a greedy council would rather jeopardize any money the leisure centre earns for what they see as value for money parking.

As some of you might be aware I've got three little kids, and at £50 a term per child 4 terms a year, that's a possible £600 + £50 parking the council are going to loose. It's not going to take many families using their buying power before the council sit up and take notice.

Kidsgrove's Clough Hall swimming pool is an excellent facility ran by Newcastle Under Lyme, and I'd rather see my money go to that Authority rather than this one over the sake of Saturday Vale fans.

You couldn't make it up, here's my rant on Pits N Pots

Posted on Pits N Pots
I've got 3 darling children, who are learning to swim at Dimensions, all on different days.

So each week that's £3 * 50 weeks, that's an extra £150.

Then the lessons them selves cost about £54, again by 3, that's £162.

But wait that's for one term, and there are four terms a year.

£648.

I'm not frilled spending £648 for my kids to learn to swim, but it gives them the chance to be safe around water and provides them with some exercise.

However I'm not going to burden myself with an extra £150 a year. Especially considering I normally can't get my hands on the 50p (non refundable) needed for lockers.

So what will I do. Simple. I'm taking my cash out of the city, and just down the road to Kidsgrove s Clough Hall baths.

The problem at Dimensions has been caused by Vale fans on Saturdays, and Students over at Fenton Manor.

1. There is a bloody great big car park next to the vale, that could be used to elevate the street parking.
2. Provide more parking at the College.

Lastly, the timing for this couldn't have been better, as councils are being told by the government that they are the guardians of local health (i.e Leisure centres)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11866031

How will our council do it? Easy, by driving people away. FFS!

I was at Hanley Park

I was at Hanley Park yesterday and the state of their football pitches could not be described as good. I have seen better waste ground for playing football on, than the one's in Hanley Park. As for Dimensions, what a rip off. Who in hell is parking there illegally? Its not as if its the centre of the world for shoppers and like. I dare say the next thing they will be doing is to increase the non-refundable locker fee up to £1.00. Take 2 kids and an adult swimming and its £15.00 plus , and an additional cost for the lockers, and now a parking charge. I was also at Westport Lake on Tuesday and with 3 kids, but had to leave because of the amount of dog crap all over the place. It was a disgrace and I reported it to Stoke on Call. I think that leisure facilities are the soft target when it comes to cut backs.

Went swimming at Dimensions

Went swimming at Dimensions last Saturday. This is what I saw. Paid the £1.00 parking and noticed that the council are paying a guys wages, from City Security, to patrol. His wages v's the parking charge....? Does it add up?

If you use the facility why dont they just give you a ticket that you can place in the windscreen to say that you are parking there whilst using the pool/gym/sports hall or pitches.

Noooooo, they wont do that, because its all about making money and not as they say to stop illegal parking.

Go to Kidsgrove pool instead !

I will be in future!

Ian was it Saturday

Ian was it Saturday afternoon? I refused to pay for my ticket last time, so handy to know when this guy is patrolling. If it's just when the matches are on, which is what Hazel Leith claimed the charges were to prevent. (she also claimed they were value for money) to my face. I tell you what's value for money ex-cllr, a decent councillor with a good head on their shoulders that looks at all angles and also replies to emails.

It was last Saturday and I

It was last Saturday and I was not aware that there was a match on as the season has finsihed. I may be wrong.
