Whats the speed of your internet at home?

By

view counter

Hi all,

I expect you all have ADSL at home, but I'm curious to know what speed you all have?
The reason I ask is, over the years I've been told by several suppliers that the maximum speed I can have is 2.5 Meg, due to how far away I live from the exchange (Kidsgrove). However, annoyingly my actual speed has almost always been 1 Meg. I'm told this is down to a fault in my house, which would surprise me as its Wilcon built.

Streaming video from YouTube and BBC iPlayer isn't so good , and I'd like to try LoveFilm's streaming video, but need a faster line.

I wish we had cable :'(

cheers
M.

Hiya Marks

Here's my speed

If you click the image above, run the test, and when it's ran copy the "Copy Direct Link" button and paste it into the comment box we can compare.

It's a topic that we've looked at a few times on here, and worth going at again.

Broadband speed checks by Sharky - Various comments and info.

Broadband - Richard - Various comments and info.

The campaign for better broadband starts here - Me - various comments, and a map explaining why our broadband is so weak.

I was around my Father-in-Laws house the other day, and his internet is with Virgin, and the difference was incredible. Little things like zooming into a google map whizzed on the screen, rather than staggered (and paused)

I hope the above links helps, where's a Virgin (Cable) when you need one!

Nice one. I've just ordered

Nice one. I've just ordered an Iplate, and will switch off the Ditribution box/booster in the loft (as the ariel dosen't work either).
I'm excisted now!
Cheers!

tunstall Wink lol, i have to admit we dont have many problems with speed even if kids are playing on cbeebies and im on as well, and on my ipod, you can vote to get a better BT connection here http://www.racetoinfinity.bt.com/ xxx

When I registered my vote,

When I registered my vote, that very same someone from BT phoned up trying to flog me BT internet.

When I said I needed a dedicated IP (fixed computer address) for work, he said they couldn't do it and he'd take my vote off the system.

BT Infinity is just a trick to flog you broadband.

Mine is with O2 on a retail

Mine is with O2 on a retail unlimited account, Speedtest.net says it is with Be unlimited, rather peculiar but never mind.

Speedtest.net Output

This seems fine for general internet usage. BT throttle you at peak times and then the system is unusable. O2 don't throttle so it is the same all day.

02 - its interesting how 02

02 - its interesting how 02 customers have faster speeds than people on the estate with other service providers (SKY, BT). I wonder why this is. Aren't we all connected to Kidsgrove exchange. My understanding was the copper wires conneting us to Kidsgrove lose signal strength the furthur away you are, and we're all 2.5 miles away Worried

I have the 10Mb/s package and can't complain at the speed here in Brownhills Road.

Hiya Mark, it's worse than

Hiya Mark, it's worse than that, we are on the Burslem exchange, and if you look at last years stats, there is a huge difference.

ALso it's a telling point that Buffy is somewhere in Tunstall (not sure where and don't want to give peoples info away) but when you look on the map, but the broadband latency between the mid Tunstall and the Bankeyfields estate is just under the halfway point between here and the Burslem exchange and the drop is massive. More than half.

An argument for Tunstall to have an exchange. Take a look at this map I did, and look with envy at Chesterton, it's got it's own exchange.

Look at the homes and businesses, it's a massive difference.

Burslem Exchange Serves (approx): 20,631 residential premises / 1,442 non-residential premises
Kidsgrove Exchange Serves (approx): 11,710 residential premises 439 non-residential premises

I've fitted an Iplate,

I've fitted an Iplate, switched off the Ditribution box/booster in the loft, removed the surge protectors (recommended elsewhere), and replaced microfilters, however my modem is still only connecting to Sky at 1020 kbps. Previously sky have advised if they detect a fault on the connection the automatically slower the speed to stabalise the connection, so I expect thats why I'm still connected at 1Meg. So I need to get sky to put me back to 3Meg and see if my changes have worked.... Watch this space.

I have just noticed i seem to be getting half the speed now anyone else noticed any difference? think i need to make a phone call lol.

I had the same problem with

I had the same problem with the internal wiring in my house, turned out that when the builders put the BT cabling in they didn't use a twisted pair, e.g. you need to use a twisted pair of cables within the BT cable so Blue and White Blue, the builders at my house had used Orange and Green (the reason they are twisted is to cancel out noise)
Just take your master socket off and have a look what colours are used.

I was getting 2mb download and lots of dropped connections, Once I put it on a twisted pair, full 8mb and it stays connected for months.

I should also point out that if you need to change to a twisted pair, you need to change it at the master socket and then at the BT point in to your house (Grey BT pannel on your wall outside).

And, remember this is BT's equipment, not yours, if you mess around with and it breaks, BT will charge you for it, plus dont blame me!

I did get the most helpful BT engineer in the world (wish I got his name) to do mine as I raised it with my ISP, and he explained it all as he was doing it.

ccna99's picture

Very valid point Andy. your

Very valid point Andy. your situation more commonly known as "split pairs"

Always use a complete pair i.e.; Blue/white-White/blue. Never substitute telephone cable with alarm cable as it is the amount of twists in a pair that makes the difference. If you use alarm wire, it will work as far as getting a dial tone, but you will loose the broadband signal, due to the twists.

Never use 'flat' telephone cable as this can cause issues too. Try to avoid 2 pair cable and try to use proper 6 pair telephone cable. Also never use CAT 5 as extension cable as this can also affect the ADSL signal. CAT 5 and 6 is great to use to connect from your router to your PC.

Another trick to improve your broadband signal is to disconnect the 'bell' wire on all extensions. This is connected to position 3 from the BT socket, this will help even if your router is pluged into master socket. However, you wont get the phones to ring that are plugged into any of the exstension sockets, but this would not be a problem if you have cordless multiple handsets around the house. This would be only a temp fix, and if it works then an iPlate should be got from BT and fitted. This can be done by the house holder.

Here is the webpage for the iPlate....

********Coincidently Virgin

********Coincidently Virgin Media posted a letter through yesterday to say they now supply the estate with super fast internet! How interesting "*******

I think if you read the small print then these speeds would only be available if you were a 'cable' customer with cable to the premises. I doubt very much that they would invest in laying cable on the Bankeyfields estates.

The speeds that people get are very dependant on distance from exchange, quality of line feeding premises, quality of router and any internal wring on the telephone network in the house, which even includes the type of BT socket you have.

The distance that the Bankeyfields estate is from the telephone exchange is the major challenge in obtaining decent broadband speeds. There are know issues of ISP's throttling back broadband speeds at certain times of the day, mainly the evening to give a fairer share of bandwidth, and also it depends on how many other people are connected onto your particular concentrator at the exchange. There can be up to 15 other users online on your concentrator, and if these people are heavy users of bandwidth, ie: watching BBC iPlayer or any other media streaming, then this has an effect on all the other users on that particular concentrator.

This is the case of all fixed line providers that run their broadband over the BT network. ISP's never guarantee speeds and it is basically pot luck on all of the above factors.

As for drops in speeds during off peak times, these can be caused by congestion at the ‘POP Sites’. There may be router or switch failure which could cause a bottle neck due to the failure of load sharing. This should be temporary and back to normal within 4 hours. If it is not then it could indicate an issue with the local network from the local exchange.
