Just joined the 27% of registered NHS organ donors, and it only took 5 minutes on the internet

I picked up a leaflet in the Doctors a couple of months ago when I was in trying to sort a chest infection out, asking for people to be organ donors, and join the register.

For what ever reason, I put the leaflet, on top of my piles of paper work and it got buried until last night, when the Mrs made me tidy some of my mess up.

On the leaflet there are a number of ways of registering, via a phone number - 0300 123 23 23, or texting SAVE to 84118, completing the leaflet and posting it off. Or, as I'm a net head, I went onto the organ donation website.

The website makes it so easy to register, it's painless, worthwhile, and takes some of the major hurdles out of our hectic busy lives.

According the literature, 96% of us would take an organ if we needed one, however only 27% of us have taken action and joined the NHS Organ Donor Register.

The NHS Organ Donor Register gives hope to more than 10,000 people of all ages across the UK who need an organ transplant.

Yet many people - on average 3 a day - die before they can have a transplant because there are simply not enough organs available.

Anyone can register. Age isn't a barrier to becoming an organ or tissue donor -people in their 70s and 80s have become donors and saved many lives. Most medical conditions don't rule you out either.

One donor can save up to 9 lives!

You have leavft me feeling

You have leavft me feeling rather guilty about this. I think I picked a leaflet up a number of years ago with good intentions, but it slipped my mind. I have to agree that it was very very easy, even for me.

Once you have your donor

Once you have your donor card, don't forget to carry it around with you, and make sure your friends and family know you are on the donor register. It can save time if the worst does happen if you have your card on you - then doctors know you are willing to donate, plus it saves your family having to make the decision themselves, at a terrible time in their lives.

It also helps to have it easily accessible - not hidden in the glove-box in you car. Mine's clearly visible in my purse.
