Whilst looking at new(ish) cars we did a bit on researching on 'Tintertnet concerning fuel efficiency, and which cars we could get away with out paying road tax each year.
On average, your UK road car falls into the level of efficency
| Urban MPG | Extra Urban MPG | Combined MPG |
| 28.225 | 47.327 | 37.837 |
How ever car manufactures have been getting more miles per gallons out of their cars, by refining engines, losing the spare tyre and what not. Diesels and Pertol Hybrids are proving the best technologies for this.
| Manufacturer | Model | Specification | Fuel Type | Transmission | Combined MPG | VED Band |
| HONDA | Insight | Insight | Petrol Hybrid | M5 | 83.10 | A |

Things aren't so great on the petrol front, and even the best falls way short of Diesels

The most fuel efficient car
The most fuel efficient car I have owned has been the Renault Grand Scenic 1.5DCI, we have just recently returned from a drive to Benidorm which was 1320 miles each way. And with driving at the French & Spanish motorway speeds of an average 130kph (80mph), We were still getting between 650 to 700 miles per tank, which I felt was very good considering 4 people in the car with plenty of luggage, plus on the way back our fair share of duty free haha.
Duty free whilst driving
That will make the journey go faster, duty free whilst driving.
Never thought of driving
Never thought of driving back that way haha, perhaps if I did, we could have driven as mad as the french and spanish drivers.
Tyres
OK, strange but true fact - one way to improve your car's fuel economy is to make sure that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.
If they are at the correct pressure, they work the way they are supposed to, if they are under or over inflated, this creates more friction on the road, so the engine has to work harder to get the wheels to turn. It also means that your tyres wear out quicker if they're not inflated properly, so better on the pocket that way too
There's also the safety aspect of having wrongly inflated tyres, tyres don't work properly, they don't grip the road properly, easier to skid, have an accident. As they're the only points of contact between you and terra firma when you're driving down the A500 at whatever the speed limt is at that part of the road, it's worth thinking about checking the pressures regularly.
Tyre pumps
OK, strange but true fact - one way to improve your car's fuel economy is to make sure that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure.
If only it was that simple. When ever I pop up to BP to check my tyres, I try to get the nozzle of my tyre and most of the air seems to escape. Can't some one design and idiot proof tyre pump.
Any particular range of tyres that you'd recommend?
