Free History Trail (& Picnic Opportunity) at Hanley's Central Forest Park
The ‘Closer to home, Circular Walks’ Scheme are holding a free fun and fact history trail on Wednesday 26th August at Central Forest Park, Hanley.
We are asking people to meet at 10:45am outside the Visitor Centre next to the car parks on Hanley Road, for an 11am start.
Family information/activity booklets (and a pencil) will be on sale for 50p.
We want to encourage families to picnic in the park after the event (bring your own picnic), and we will be introducing children to a number of nostalgic games.
Pat Whitehouse, Scheme manager (and walk leader) says… “The walk will follow the natural lay of the land around the entire site, before circling the lake and returning to the Visitor Centre. There will be opportunities to stop and hear about the history of how Hanley Forest Park has been transformed from the derelict piece of waste land it was following the closure of Hanley Deep Pit in 1962, into the beautiful park it is today.”
“There are many interesting facts about the site which many people may not know, or may have forgotten. We live in an age where many stories, once told by older family members, are long forgotten and sharing local history and knowledge with others is important because this knowledge will be lost forever if it is not shared.”
Anyone interested in taking part in this event should bring a waterproof mac and wear shoes they feel comfortable in.
