H.M. Revenue and Customs TAX scam

By

One of our members has received an email purporting to come from H.M. Revenue and Customs, headed "Tax Refund Notification" and telling them he is due 188GBP as a refund. The email instructs him to open a link and insert his bank details. The email bore the H.M. Revenue and Customs insignia.
The email was a scam. Never give out bank details online in response to an unsolicited email.

Email scammers

I've just spent most of today, trying to plug a hole in one of our websites, which was actually sending these emails.

What happens is the hacker/spammer/fraudster looks for certain vunrabilities on a server, and if it can find a way to send a mail from it, it will.

The site in question, had a send an article to a friend, which was used by a little program to send a 1000 emails to various users from their list of email addresses.
