Horses ridden in built up areas!

I am writing this blog as rather concerned on a family who are riding their horse and sheltland pony in a built up area of a Tunstall estate,in fact the road also mainly used as a racerack at times, surely there is a law against these animals just being in the street,ok maybe wrong but it to me seems very dangerous not only for the horse but for the rider, and of which is a child,i have noticed that no helmet is worn as well, and not only that not one but 2 horse boxes are parked in the street way up on the pavement which i thought was for public use? i am all for animal welfare but also for safety of others to,also sends my dog barking mad everytime they ride going there and back past the window, got to the stage where had to close the curtains in the daytime, surely there is lovely fields to enjoy riding instead of making and putting the lives of the animal and the public at risk!

Not sure

I'm not sure, Claire, but I don't think there are any laws regarding where you can and can't ride a horse. The Horseboxes are of course supposed to abide by the road laws that the rest of us follow, re not parking on pavements and causing obstructions etc.

I don't think the wearing of a riding hat is law either, just common sense and required by all riding schools and trekking centres. Which roads a horse is ridden along is, again, common sense, and any sensible person wouldn't be taking their animal on any busy roads unless absolutely necessary. As for taking a child out on a busy road on a shetland pony, (who are notoriously cheeky and liable to deposit said child on floor at any moment from what I remember of my childhood riding days)well, again, possibly common sense should have thought better of that idea, but only if it's there in the first place. Unfortunately it's also not a legal requirement that horse owners should have some. Wink

Horse riding on a public road.

Hi ya Claire this is the Law according to the Highway code regarding riding a horse on a public highway.
Safety equipment. Children under the age of 14 MUST wear a helmet which complies with the Regulations. It MUST be fastened securely. Other riders should also follow these requirements. These requirements do not apply to a child who is a follower of the Sikh religion while wearing a turban

My only outher advice would be give the R S P C A a call I am sure they would give you all the advice you would need to deal with this problem. On The Phone
