Stoke-on-Trent Petrol & Diesel Price Watch. Find the cheapest fuel in Stoke on Trent and Tunstall

view counter

Keeping an eye on petrol prices round and about Tunstall, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire.

When we first started keeping an eye on prices way back in 2008, petrol was 89p and diesel was 94p.

On this page you will find the cheapest pumps in the Stoke, Hanley, Burslem, Tunstall & Newcastle-under-Lyme regions.

My Tunstall has also being keeping track of recent petrol price rises due in part to the proposed 2012 Petrol Lorry Driver strike, and no doubt pump profiteering.

Just reading on PetrolPrices.com that fuel duty will rise again

I've just reading on PetrolPrices.com that fuel duty will rise again by a further 2p on the already inflated prices, in two weeks time. So for every pound we spend at the pumps, 71p is tax. Which brings a new meaning to highway robbery.

Despite pledges from Gordon Brown, we'll see prices at the pump going up again.

After looking around I found the following statement on WIKIPEDIA - "Many European countries such as the UK, France, and Italy use a high fuel tax to decrease dependence on fossil fuels (that often have to be imported), reduce traffic and reduce pollution."

That would be all well and good if we weren't paying inflated road tax and more importantly a greener alternative being invested in by a government that barely gives the motor industry the time of day.

I get the feeling fuel thefts will be on the increase again. Some cars will of less value than the fuel in the tank.

MattB's picture

You could get a greener car?

Alternatives would be buying a car that had a better mpg?

janet-k's picture

Hmmm

But, would a nice, green car like that cope with the weather? I know I'd rather have my bit heavier car to get up the estate when it's all white - again!!!!!!!! Don't think I'd fancy the chances of getting any grip in that little thing.

Matt I do not like green I prefer the nice bright red of my motor. Anyway come the revolution or lottery win I am going to get an Aston Martin V8 Global warming machine.

With the likes of Tesco

With the likes of Tesco Longton, keeping their prices high, unless you spend x amount in store it is going to be difficult to compete. The likes of Shell/BP always seem expensive and uncompetitive which leaves you with the likes of Asda (Wolstanton) and Sainsburys leading the way. Sainsburys also have the added benefit of free parking in Hanley which after ASDA Wolstanton makes it my second choice.

Cheapest Petrol 117p, Cheapest Diesel 121p
This really isn't good. Add the rest of the VAT in the new year, and we are going to be heading towards to 130 mark.

For every 119.9p a litre of unleaded you are actually paying 5p to the retailer, 39.85p for the product and 57.19p in duty and VAT of 17.86p

Diesel is likewise broken down as every litre costing 12.9 would be 5p delivery to the retailer, 40.7p for the product it'self and 57.19p + 18.01p VAT.

First the good news. The

First the good news. The price of oil is coming down.

However you better cut your celebrations short as the government will be adding an extra 7p shortly to your fuel bill, driving the cost of a liter of unleaded well over the 130p mark (at current levels, it could be a lot more).

In addition to VAT and fuel duty increases this week, there will be another rise in fuel duty in April.

The combined 5.6 per cent hike - almost twice the rate of inflation - is entirely due to measures being imposed by Chancellor George Osborne.

The Freight Transport Association said lorry drivers had been paying an average of £3,800 more on fuel in 2010 than in 2009.

It said this month's tax rises alone would add another £1,200 to annual diesel bills.

Barry Proctor, whose haulage firm is based in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, said: 'This is a huge blow to the haulage industry.

'We've had horrendous weather over the last few weeks, but yet again this industry has managed to deliver Christmas, unlike an awful lot of other industries that failed their customers miserably.

'And instead of a pat on the back from George Osborne, it's another body blow.'

A poll by car supermarket Motorpoint found 67 per cent of drivers oppose the VAT rise.

'Further increases at the pumps as a result of tax rises are bad news for consumers,' said managing director David Shelton.

Industry experts say the January tax increases will add 3.5p to the cost of a litre of petrol and diesel.

The average price of a litre of unleaded stands at a record 124.16p, compared with 107.74p at this time last year.

I think its time the peasants

I think its time the peasants started revolting. I have a lot of empathy with some on of the measures the goverment is having to take but Tax on fuel at the current rate will cripple a lot of buisnesses businesses.

I think peasants are always

I think peasants are always revolting, but they can't help that.

As for the rest of us, well, we could start a revolt, but it's not like it's exactly easy to use alternatives to the car. I've considered a cheaper mode of transport (eg moped/scooter) for shorter journeys, but with friends and family scattered around the country a car is essential for visiting etc. The Initial outlay of something like a moped would totally outweigh any savings that would be made on fuel from using it.

There's always fuel price

There's always fuel price increases. As the old saying goes - there are only two things certain in life - Death and Taxes. And Tax is where most of that cost of fuel goes.

One question though, You've got Sainsbury's Hanley on the list, but not Asda Wolstanton, which you have to drive past to get to Sainsbugs Hanley. I do believe that Asda is cheaper (at least for Diesel) than most of the other places you've got listed. Does this mean that wherever you're getting your info from doesn't list Asda prices?

Can you remember when fuel

Can you remember when fuel was going to cost £1.00 a litre it was about 18 months ago, I can remember all the truckers bringing London to a standstill. The outcome from this action was they managed to broker a deal with the then government over future fuel rises and I think they now get some sort of tax relief. However this was never passed on to the motorist, I think it is about time we as motorists demonstrate regarding affordable petrol and diesel prices.

MattB's picture

I remember, I think I just

I remember, I think I just started this section of the site around about that time. The cause then was an unsettled middle east. Now what we are seeing is the weak dollar, and very high imports of oil going to China and India as there need for consumption goes up.

Basically the motor industry is frantically creating technologies that will no doubt be refined over the next decade, but they have left it too late to help now, and besides the government will work out a way of taxing electric cars by making batteries taxable, or fitting cars with pay as you drive tarrifs.

Food

I read with amazement the other day on the sentinel's site that this won't effect me, because I don't drive! Fair enough, this person doesn't drive, but like everyone else, they do eat.

Oil is used to produce the majority of nitrates used to fertilize our fields, is needed by farmers to transport goods for packaging or slaughter, supermarkets and distributors to ship and transport those goods to stores.

So we aren't just going to see a rise in food because of the VAT increase but also the other prices because of the profit margin being narrowed by the increased price of petrol.

For a country that relies heavily on cars (what's the alternative - our laughable expensive public transport) we are pretty much up the creek

MattB's picture

No effect on the price of

Great news for world peace

Great news for world peace and petrol prices, the EU have announced a oil embargo on all Iranian oil imports.

Today's announcements will have a number of major implications for all.

1. Countries such as Greece rely heavily on oil sourced from Iran, so not only have they been struggling financially they will now face a major fuel crisis.

2. Iran have warned that they won't take this lying down and aren't going to be to chuffed having a major part of the countries income cut off. So they have warned before today that they will close Strait of Hormuz, the route where the rest of our oil is shipped from other oil producing nations.

Best price today for
Petrol: £1.289
Diesel: £1.369

Prospect isn't looking good

Prospect isn't looking good for the motorist full stop.

Not only is the price of fuel going up, but insurance is going up massively too.

The motorist has massive vetoing power, which if we start to band together can start using our buying to influence super markets and other petrol operators.

You don't have to strike if you can't afford, you can always go slow..
