POLICE have been given new powers to tackle gangs of youths gathering in the streets and causing trouble.

A Section 30 Dispersal Zone is now in force in Norton and Ball Green, which aims to stop anti-social behaviour in the area.

It gives officers the power to disperse groups of two or more people, and take under-16s home if they are found roaming the streets after 9pm.

Inspector Mark Hardern, commander of Tunstall neighbourhood policing unit, said police were getting fewer calls about anti-social behaviour in the area, but the new zone was aimed at a "hard core" group of troublemakers.

He said: "Most of the anti-social behaviour calls we get are about rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour.,,,,,
