Speed Checks 21st April 2009

Today Police conducted a speed check again on Reg Mitch Way. Below are the following results:

18 Endorsable fixed penalty tickets (3 points & £60 fine) were issued for speeding offences.
20 Motorists were spoken to and given advice with regard to their speed and manner of driving.
1 Motorist was reported for summons for speeding and no insurance.
1 Vehicle was seized under sec165a of the road traffic act 1988.
3 Motorists were reported for summons for speeding offences. This was due to either their speed being excessive or through the points “totting-up” system.

Hopefully these figures will reasure local residents that we are doing something regarding the highlighted concerns of the neighbourhood, and may also help future arguments in favour of permanent installation of traffic calming measures.

Good result

Thanks for the updates Glyn, super work. Do you feel that the message is getting through and safety improving?

Is that all day or just for an hour? If it's an hour £1080 ain't bad.

Missing the point.......

Whilst I appreciate the work being done, I personally feel that we are missing the point...Yes, the results above are commendable, but to really get the message through, shouldn't we be deploying these cameras at peak times, i.e evenings and weekends?????? I don't think we are moving forward when the cameras are out during weekdays... Now that summer is approaching, more families like mine are enjoying walks at the weekends and we all want to feel safe when walking along RMW......

Bigger picture

I have to disagree, the police are building a picture, and fighting our corner.

If the police think the road is too fast, then they can help us to force measures through.

Just think of it as a start.

P.S

Thanks for pushing this.

Speed Checks 21st April 2009

Saw them myself at around 2.30 P.M this afternoon.
Just a point regards the Community Speed Watch issue.
Put my name forward to volunteer to help and had a reply regarding dates for training, which I replied to, and then nothing?
Has anyone, who said they would be available for the half days course at Longton Police Station, heard anything?
A Copy of the content from the e-mail below:

" Hello all,

I am responsible for delivering the above training. The session takes between 3-4 hours, with the first half being theory and the second being practical and assessment. I can deliver this at the police station at Longton, but would prefer if possible to come to you. Is there a suitable venue that we may use for the first half?

I have the following availability:

APRIL.
22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30.

MAY.
5, 6, 10, 12, 16, 17.

The time is negotiable to suit your needs. "

Just another thought!!!

Ok....The speed checks prove that there is an issue now.
You would of thought that with the recent checks over the last week or so the message may of got round? But it appears not, as many are still being caught within a short period of operating the checks on these various days.
Now, although an important police operation in the eyes of the law and the community, valuable police time and resources are being taken up with this issue on Reg Mitch. I, today, spotted 1 officer operating the speed camera. 1 Officer and 1 PCO at side of road. 2 police vehicles, an additional officer in second vehicle, dealing with Sabb Convertible driver, who had fallen foul of the situation.
Now in my eyes, all officers and vehicles that were in attendance were justified, and there is a bonus of taking various vehicles off the road for other issues apart from speeding. Couldn’t police time be better spent?
Could this 'Express Way', be more practicably better policed by a fixed speed camera?
Ahhh “yes”, I hear you say, but then everyone would know there is a speed camera there, and slow down, avoiding a fixed fine and penalty points, and hence no revenue through fines for speeding.
Now that would be a real result!!
We have all been there, and seen the sneaky mobile vans and manned speed camera's when we have been out and about on our journeys, and I would find it hard to find anyone who has not run the gauntlet of speeding at there own peril without a thought for more vulnerable road users, perhaps not so consciously, at some time in their driving career?
It's sometimes gratifying to see those caught for such offences on roads that we are passionate about that affect us directly, but with the evidence of speeding, which directly put others a risk, does require a more and permanent solution to be put in place.
At the end of the day, quoting what the council and police and other organisations say, “They are not speed cameras, but Safety Cameras". Lets have some safety then!!! ( Let alone some common sense )
The council seems to disregard safety issues on the Reg Mitch, such as overgrown vegetation and road layout, well maybe the initial cash outlay of a 'Fixed Safety Camera' will provide the safety to other road users and a steady revenue (Speeders permitting) to support other safety initiatives within the county?
To finish, let me applauded the local police for their excellent support on this matter, but as a short reminder to the cause, on leaving the estate at the ‘roundabout of death’ at 5.30 this evening, I was reminded that I don’t live in the cuddly world, by a red V Reg WV Golf, doing in excess of 40MPH, with a guy Texting, whilst holding the phone in one hand ‘and’ the steering wheel, totally oblivious that a round-about actually existed. Maybe not a Safety Camera we need but video camera.
Would make great viewing (or maybe not),on “You’ve been framed”

Responding to the above comments...

Regarding the above comments...You will find in the not too distant future, that weekend and evening operations will happen, and some have already been planned. This is to combat, as you quite rightly say, the nuisance of motorcycles and weekend drivers who use the road as a racetrack.

With regards to the request for community speed camera operators, I forwarded all your details to Roger Craig, who will be working through the list to get as many people trained as possible. He works throughout Stoke on Trent, and so has to assist will all neighbourhoods, and not just ours.

I will send him an email asking for an update, but you can contact him direct if you like, as you have his number and email address...he won't bite!

A final point....my Inspector Mark Hardern is aware of the figures, and fully supportive of moves to improve traffic safety on RMW. He will be at the next meeting to address your concerns, and is looking into using the recent figures to positive effect.

Thanks
Glyn

Superb news

Hi Glyn

I know it's too early to be jumping up and down for joy, but your closing statement did make me shout out ""Back of the net".

As well as your speed check scheme, this has to be the most positive thing we've heard about Reginald Mitchell Way in a long time.

I really appreciate the way your self and staffs police force have dealt with us, first by putting us forward for the speedwatch scheme, then the speed check, and finally for making it official in your eyes that something needs to be done.

Look forward to seeing you both at the meeting.

Matt

Good news indeed

It is reassuring to the residents, and am sure Glyn too, that the powers that be realise the serious situation regarding this matter.

Traffic calming

I have banged on about this, both on the forum, and in private, it is about time our new fire chief becomes involved, as when the station is built, they will need to put to the council what systems they will need, is Lee Wanger still on the fire commitee?

Web Monkey's picture

Yes

Yes he is. We'll have to try and get in touch with someone from the fire department.

In fact someone from the firedepartment signed up to the site, back in August, with the aim to keep us updated.

Sadly that's not happened.

Todays Sentinel - covers the spped checks on Reginald Mitchell

The sentinel has today printed an update to this weeks Reginald Mitchell Way's speed checks.

Snippet
"A number of residents thanked the officers for their efforts during the operation which followed a similar one on Wednesday, April 15 when more than 25 motorists were dealt with.

Inspector Mark Harden, commander of the Tunstall neighbourhood policing team, said: "We are responding directly to the concerns of residents.

"We have done something about it by targeting motorists who ignored the clearly marked restriction, many of whom admitted they knew they were breaking the law.

"Operations such as this are only possible because of the support of the community. In fact many of the motorists we challenged about their driving were supportive of the action we were taking."
