Reginald Mitchell Way Roundabouts - Reponse from the council

Towards the end of last year I emailed the council about the chatterley roundabout and our beloved focus roundabout.

After carrying out some sort of survey, this is the response I've had back.

Further to your recent e-mail regarding safety issues on the roundabouts on
Reginald Mitchell Way I have now had the opportunity to carry out an initial
investigation of the issues raised.

As part of its statutory obligations the City Council maintains records of all
recorded accidents involving personal injury. These records are available for
the five year period to the end of 2008.

At the Chatterley Road Roundabout there were 6 accidents, all of the casualties
received only minor injuries. Four of these accidents involved vehicles pulling
onto the roundabout colliding with circulatory traffic and two were shunts
involving traffic on the northern arm. Over the same period of time there were
4 recorded accidents at the 'Focus' roundabout, again all casualties received
only minor injuries. Two of these accidents were attributable to vehicles
changing lanes on the roundabout, one was a shunt on the northern arm and one
was a single vehicle losing control exiting the roundabout.

Whilst it is our aim to have no road traffic accidents at all within the City,
unfortunately it is inevitable that there will always be accidents occurring on
the highway - as virtually all accidents are attributable to errors in human
behavior and not as a result of the road layout itself. As a result it can be
very difficult to always identify accident patterns and develop changes to the
highway which would reduce the accidents occurring. In pure road traffic
accident terms this level of traffic accidents is not a significant number,
relatively speaking, and therefore would not be flagged up on the City
Council's accident blackspot list for further analysis and work.

We will, however consider improvements on the roundabouts for inclusion in next
years programme of work. These could possibly take the form of reducing the
circulatory widths on the roundabout and improving visibility by moving stop
lines. As you will be aware the City Council receives numerous requests to
undertake improvements on the Highway. Due to limited funding being available,
the introduction of any changes on Reginald Mitchell Way will need to be
assessed and prioritized alongside other schemes.

Thats a No then

Nice statement backed up by stats. But a long winded way to say NO. It looks like when the first serious or god forbid fatal accident occurs we will all be saying to the council " we told you so".
Good try anyway WM

Next step

I don't think the problem should end here, as in the real world it won't.

I think the next thing we need to do is raise awareness about the road, in the local press, and with our local councillors. The more people who know about our problem, the more that might slow down, and also join the cause.

Do we have anyone reading this who can make a sturdy temporary sign that we can put on the lamp posts?

Cant make sign, but could

Cant make sign, but could get prices from City signs, who did all of the practice signage. Its proably illegal to have non-statutory' signs though, so need to be careful I think!

Also, I think Andy Norman used to work at Lexus- they too have a very long-winded way of saying naff-all! The car saga continues. It's only been going on for 7 weeks now (well, it will be 7 weeks on Monday).
