Never ending cycle
I'm really shocked by those pictures. That something so new, has turned into this so quickly.
What is the white stuff actually inside the park? Is it shredded paper? If so why would anyone dump it in the park?
Looks like a lot of pages from a magazine have been ripped up and scattered. Why would you?
The kids who come to the park, haven't got a clue have they. Do they think there Mums and Dads will come down and hurt themselves? Do they think that disgarded cans will do no damage? A smashed bottle is no bother to anyone? They need to get a grip and start taking responisblilty for their own actions.
Bryn - thanks for raising the issue with everyone.
Anyone else got an issue with this?
Rubbish
The shredded paper is probably out of someone's dutifully put out recycling. It looks like there's a couple of bin lids there so the kids prob nicked the whole recycling bins to go and use the lids for sledging on
Hope it gets cleared quickly.
On another point I have noticed now that all the snow has disappeared (for what seems like the first time is ages!) the estate (WCW/JRW side) is looking a bit messy - there is quite a bit of litter and a few people have old furniture/rubbish piled up beside their houses making it look rather unsightly.. maybe it was like this before but I'm seeing it with a fresh pair of eyes since the snow lol!
Brought up before
I am back, sorry long hours short days. I did bring the issue of dumping on the open up at the last meeting but several people said they had not noticed it. It has now got even worse. I think we definatly need a clean up day. Comments please.
clean up day!
Good idea Steve.
Also just a thought that it is the school hols again soon! and in the summer the litter pick worked really well as they had a prize too and lots of kids got involved. Not sure who ran this was it a police thing? Not sure.
Maybe could try that again, also raises awareness??
Clean Up Day
We took part in the "community litter pick" it was a little slow to begin with as people turned up before the "police truck". It was a good event, especially to see the kids trying to beat each other who could get the most rubbish.
Also it was good to see the local kids and the police communicating with each other.
Have searched on here and found something, don't know how to link to it but if you enter "litter pick" in the search box it will bring up a list of thinks but it does come up on there, it was organised by PC Talbot May 2009 time.
If there is another one and we are about we would do it again as our son had such a good time last time.
Clean Up ?????????
It would be nice to see the open-space cleaned up but i think it is a bit much to get the kids off the estate to do it. Personally i think the majority of the mess is generated from people who do not live on the estate. I would be worried about the kids hurting themselves on glass and other sharp objects that are on the ground that they may pick up. I think that this is a job that should be passed on to the council.
Good Comment
I also agree with getting the council to clean it up, although I wouldn't hold your breath, they may get to it in the next 12 months!
From the litter pick last year the instructions were to leave the bits of glass alone and to only let the adults pick them up to reduce the number of injuries if they wanted to and you did get grabbers to pick them up so you don't actually use your hands
DIY
Come on this is SOT city council you knowwe are going to have to Do it Your Self. Now they can fall back on predicted spending cuts they wil have an excuse not to do antthing. May be I am just being a cynic. Comments please
Open-Space Clean-UP
Hey up Steve regarding the clean up, I agree with you that the council have now been given the perfect excuse not to do things in and around the city due to budget cuts and penny pinching and perhaps we could clean up the open-space ourselves, but the clean goes far beyond a simple litter pick especially around the sports court and kiddies play area. There is wood, house bricks, bits from plastic kid’s toys, bottles, cans, car tyres an array of rubbish and I for one would not like to tackle the moat around the play area as that is disgusting and to top things off some mindless scum bag has allowed there dog to crap in the kiddies play area. I think on this occasion we should all push for the council to come and have a cleanup.
The kiddies play area and sports court has become a gathering point for teenagers to come and hang out drinking and smoking when it goes dark, at the next Residents Association Meeting I would propose that we try to get the fence around the kiddies play area altered in height and the possibility of locking this area and the sports court after dark. I for one would put myself forward as a key holder. Comments please.
Footpaths as bad
Took my mother in laws dog and my son for a walk this morning (note - am not a regular dog walker) and the amount of glass bottles from the footpath to the high street was amazing, will be on to the council tomorrow morning to complain. Safer to walk in the grass than the footpath for both our safety and the dogs! Wonder if we could claim from the council for any injuries that are caused over the park / footpaths at the moment!
i agree, i have also been
i agree, i have also been through today and didnt realise how bad it was. Yeah will get onto the council too. And yes, its also too bad for the children to do a litter pick!!
Council
Have been on to the council today re the broken glass on the footpath, she has given me a reference number and did advise that it could take a couple of days for someone to come out and assess and then remove the broken glass, she did seem a little more concerned when I said I am sure there is a health and safety issue if small children fall on it!!!!!
Quite impresssed that I didn't get well can't you remove it yourself!
Will keep my eye on it this week to see if it does get removed.
If it does work and the footpath gets cleared up, then may be worth another call re the park. Mind you considering how busy the park was when I got in at after 5pm perhaps some of the many parents that were over there may complain to the council then us regular ones may not have to!
Watch this space.
Open Space clean up
Quick update:
I've just spoken to a neighbour, who spotted about 5 workmen tackling the bankeyfields open space yesterday.
Nice one everyone involved. Hopefully it won't get in the same state for a long time. Time will tell.
