Scam Alert: Home Security systems scam targeting the elderly in Stoke-on-Trent - Cold Calling
Problem: A report has been received from a resident in Hartshill of an unsolicited telephone call from a company supplying security alarms.
Having ascertained that she was elderly, the caller said that the government has donated free of charge a number of security systems for installation in properties in her area and that she had been identified as a suitable recipient. The caller said that there were company representatives in her area and that they could call that day.
On further questioning the caller reluctantly admitted that there may be an installation charge for the security system.
This is a scam.
The government does not provide free security systems in this way. The company at best will cover the cost of the system by charging an excessive installation charge. At worst they could be sizing up the security of your property for more sinister reasons.
Our Advice: Never deal with uninvited callers on the telephone or at your door. They often tell lies to get your business. You don’t know if they are legitimate and you will not be able to trace them if things gowrong.
Always get three written quotes before having work done.
