Suggested Tunstall community event for the Stoke-on-Trent centenary

I've got a suggested event for the 100 years celebration of our 6 towns city.

Lets inform and educate the people who still think it's fine for their animal to foul over pavements and walkways, and who think it's okay to litter our streets with all manner of rubbish.

Whats the bee in my Easter bonnet now I hear your ask. Well it's simple really. I took the three kids, (1 in her buggy, the other two are walking or being dragged) into Tunstall last Saturday. We went via summer bank road and Hawes Street.

The one thing that I really noticed, and it's something you do tend to notice more when you have little kids, because if you don't watch were they're treading, you know for sure they won't. Anyway every 5-10 meters on the pavement there was dog crap. All the way into town, turd after turd after turd. I just thought it was disgusting, and made the area look right complete dump. Interspersed between the dog poo was the occasional  can, fast food wrapper, bottle, newspaper. You name it, and it had been dropped.

How about a Respect Tunstall, a week in which people pull togther and say enough is enough, were going to do something about our town.

Just the ramblings of a deluded man, or have I got a point?

Sounds Good

Sounds like a cracking idea. However, the only people who would be into it would be the people who are already playing by the rules!!!

Education and Health And Safety

Are some people naive or just plain silly whilst walking around the open-space today there were a group of lads having a game of footie in the sports court, but what amazed me was the fact that they were playing footie whilst trying to dodge a pile of dog crap which some irresponsible moron had not gotten up after their dog had decided to take a dump. If we are to educate people with the importance of not dropping litter and cleaning up after their pets we should also educate them regarding the possible health risks of coming into contact with dog poo, I am sure that James our resident vet could comment on this. What on earth is wrong with some people that they have total disregard for other people’s health and safety especially children and are prepared to walk away from a pile of crap that their dog has just dumped in an area were kids are supposed to be able to have fun and play in relative safety. Whoever you are shame on you.

£1000 fine

Not just the health implications, which are real and genuine, but also the legal aspect. It is illegal to not clean up after your dog. However, turning a blind eye is not a defence. If If you dont spot your dog fouling, you are still liable to prosecution!!

I dont think the people concerned really care about their own health (or that of their dog- up to 40% dogs are not vaccinated, 80% not wormed appropriately), so caring about the health of others is likely to be much lower on their agenda. But that does mean the actual risks (toxocara causing blindness in children) are much higher due to the lack of worming! However, the risk of a fine of £1000- that might be worth thinking about. For more information, see

And remember, £1000 fine if you get caught not clearing up:

YOUR DOG, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY- dont let it be your £1000 fine too!

Council in Burton are spraying the poo pink

I saw a news report last night, saying that one of the local Staffordshire councils was spraying dog poo ping, with the aims of highlighting just how bad the problem was getting, and try and make people think about clearing up their dogs dirt.

Burton Mail

Pink spray drawing attention to dog poo
COUNCIL chiefs have highlighted Burtonʼs dog poo problem by marking the muck with water-soluble fluorescent pink spray.

East Staffordshire Borough Council’s enforcement team kick-started its town-wide awareness campaign by cleaning up faecesstrewn parts of Brizlincote Valley.

The team totted up the offending piles on Wednesday and will repeat the count again on Friday, March 19, to gauge the extent of what is a long-standing bugbear.

After spraying the mess pink, the authority’s street services team removed it to return the ground to a more sanitary state.

Free dog poop bags were handed out during the clean-up and a free, limited supply is now available at the Springwood veterinary practice, in Spring Terrace Road.

Bernard Peters (pictured), the council’s deputy leader for environment and leisure, who also represents the Brizlincote ward for the Tories, said: “Although recent years have shown general improvements, dog fouling on public streets and in green spaces has been a constant source of complaint and has continually had a detrimental impact on the environment.

“We want to make dog fouling socially unacceptable to the entire population of the borough and are appealing for communities to work with us to tackle this problem and to report any information to us regarding details of specific offenders, descriptions, times, days and vehicles involved, to enable us to take further action.

“The council is very aware that the majority of dog owners do behave responsibly and clear up after their pets, but a small minority, who might not even live in the Brizlincote area, is ruining it for them.

“It is these people that this campaign is targeting and hoping to educate about the consequences of allowing their dogs to foul on the pavements and on grass areas and who continue not clearing it up.”

What a good Idea must try and get council to do the same round here.
If it stands out they may see the problem and realise that it needs cleaning up.
