OUR CITY Magazine

view counter

Every so often, a large A3 magazine pops through our doors, published by the City Council, called OUR CITY.

Does anybody find this mag informative? Or is it just a way of putting council officials face's in the spotlight, for them to self-congratulate themselves for doing a so called 'good job'?

Now bearing in mind, this magazine goes to every house in the city, how much does it cost to produce and print?

Is it produced, just so the council can use it for it to hit it's recycling targets?

With the age of the internet, is it really necessary to produce this glossy magazine, and if it was abandoned, how much money could it save?

Would someone like to ask this through a freedom of information request, as I am sure we would be shocked by the production, printing and distribution costs?

What I find annoying is It's

What I find annoying is

  • It's on glossy expensive paper
  • it rarely promotes council facilities
  • Paints a very rosey picture of things when things aren't rosey

However there are some useful things in there, especially from my point of view for news gathering.

Lets do something useful here though.

Lets put a list together of what should be in there

Well sorry to say think I

Well sorry to say think I have only ever found 1 article to read in there and that was about GPS doing gardening work at the fire station, even then it was only due to the fact the children in the article had the school jumpers on otherwise I wouldn't have read that.  I normally flick through to see if any interesting articles headlines jump out, most of the time they don't and it goes straight in the recycle box, hubby doesn't even flick thorugh it.  Sorry but 1 more thing that can be classified as junk mail that I can't see the point of.

Sorry

Thanks Ian,Now 3 years later

Thanks Ian,

Now 3 years later on I would expect that figure to have risen somewhat from the £222,000. Now that’s a lot of money just to be put into the recycle bin?

I would gather that in past times, residents of Stoke City Council said they they were not kept informed? Thus the birth of ' OUR CITY ' magazine. With the internet being more common now, do we need a hard copy sent to every home in the City?

There should be a review of this magazine as I am sure £222,000 + could be spent on providing services instead of cutting them?

Maybe the 'Monkey' would like to put this to a poll on the website, so we can gauge the feeling on whenever this publication is worth the expense?

It is available on line and here is the address:
