DAFT IDEA

Bonfire in the paddock daft idea. 1 the contractors have already made a mess lets not make it worse. 2 Who is going to pay for the insurance cover you will need 3 who will manage it 4 I bet the residents living closest to the paddock will object. 5 Give one reason why it is a good idea.

1 reason

Last year, one family lit their fire works on the path just of the top of Spitfireway/The Park/Path/Summer Bank overgrown garden/Street light.

It was a brilliant display, maybe we do away with the bonfire this year and all stand around whilst another fanastic fire displayy goes off (+ whip around).

As a side line, sauages, jacket potatoes, burgers and bring your own beer and family.

One reason? Would be good for parents to delegate rocket firing duties, and let the dads enjoy the fireworks with kids, instead of lighting and running for cover.

Reason two, would be good for community building.

Reason three, if there is only one set of fire works, less people will fire off their own, saving pets feelings.

I won't even get you started on Halloween Steve.

My house backs onto the

My house backs onto the paddock, and I do not object to the idea, I agree if you want to insure something like this the cost would be massive. That is why I will probably end up at JTF Wholesale again to buy my own packs for personal use.

Bonfire

Years ago in the small village from where I hail we had a community bonfire every year which was very enjoyable for all involved. It was before the days of Liability Insurance and all the village would donate SUITABLE materials to burn on the fire for example old wooden furniture and pieces of wood that all the men seemed to have lying around in the shed/garage etc etc. The ladies (god it sounds like a right sexist affair now!) would make hot soup, toffee apples and jacket potatoes and everyone would bring their family box of fireworks to share with everyone else.

Personally now (and unfortunately) although it sounds a fun idea I would have to say 'No' to a bonfire on the paddock for this year. As has been said liability is a big word these days - who would be prepared to pay upfront for that? Also who does the land belong to? I am assuming the council and they would no doubt have to give permission for such an event. You would also have to consider other things like parking (people would hear about it and come!), first aid, traffic problems should smoke disrupt road visibility, the use of correct materials for a bonfire (otherwise people would just treat it as a quick way to get rid of rubbish like paints, electrical appliances and foam filled furniture etc) and also the tidying up/returning the land to pre-fire state.

A jolly good idea but not practical in such a short space of time (only 5 weeks til Bonfire Night) maybe a thought for the future though.... maybe a bonfire committee needs forming lol.. any volunteers?!

Not a Daft Idea

This is not really a daft idea. I agree that more time would be required in order to get all the necessary work completed with the authorities, that is why I voted 'NO' at this time.

From seeing others do the same, at a minimum we would require;

  • Permission from the landowner
  • If a bonfire were to be constructed, a safety visit from the fire brigade
  • Some basic liability insurance

Not sure about these but in industry as a minimum we require these;

  • Risk Assessments
  • Health and Safety Procedures
  • A designated first aid person

Many will say this is nonsense and they can invite friends around and do this sort of thing anyway.

However, at what point does a few people having fun become an organised event?

This is the question we need to find the answer to before going too far and then regretting it later.

We should never give up on events such as this, and the enthusiasm shown to make this work should be appluaded. Maybe we should work on getting this event ready for next year.

still daft idea

The idea became daft the minute the Health & saftey gestapo took over this country on the back of Where there,s blame there,s a claim culture. Also the idea of a few friends having a bonfire changes into a planned event the minute it is discussed on a comunity web site like this one. I am not a kill joy but having participated in this community for the last few years I know how difficult it is to get people to join in any organised event.

Oh yes & as I ribbed WM last night about his green credentials of all the carbon that will be put into the atmosphere went up in smoke O:)

Halloween

Has anyone contacted the saltbox, as they usually print the "no trick or treat cards" for those who do not want a knock on the door, if anyone is going to this years NHW conference, they usually give them away there.
